http://blog.dloh.org/2016/02/12/the-unreasonable-awesomeness-of-swiftforth.html

A review of SwiftForth that highlights the following features:

- LOCATE
- EDIT
- WHERE
- SEE
- being able to turn the optimizer off
- DASM
- DUMP
- singlestep.f
- the system being written in Forth

Also from this guy: https://github.com/cthulhuology/sdlforth.git
SDL bindings for SwiftForth. The tutorials work nicely enough.

I've no idea. The phrase that comes to mind for me is "fuck you".

I see you've taken some time out of your busy schedule from writing
Haskell anagram generators. Tough at the top, eh?

This Dave Goehrig is a corporate shill.

He has been working with SwiftForth for two weeks, and already he has a website out promoting SwiftForth.

The big problem with the internet is too many people with minimal knowledge who want to jump straight into being teachers.

A guy with a blog. He'd used free Forths or non-Forths for years, and
then he tried SwiftForth, and he was blown away by all of the little
quality of life features it has. He lists some of them in the blog.
This is pretty light advocacy, and if it bothers you this much you'll
just fail to make the obvious, productive responses, which are:

1. oh yeah? Let me tell you about *my* Forth's quality of life
features.

2. oh yeah, those are pretty good. I should add them to my Forth.

> a corporate shill.

Pretend you're a corporate shill for a moment. Is this the kind of
post you'd make? Would you appreciate seeing it on clf?

Pretend you're a serious person who's seriously annoyed by corporate
shills, and not just a massively buttburt-by-Forth-Inc bitter psycho.
How should a serious person respond to such flagrant shilling?
Wouldn't it be an incredibly appropriate time to draw attention to bad
things about SwiftForth?

Here's a bad thing about almost all Forth systems in May 2017:
system development seems to have been halted for several years now.
SwiftForth has at least had a bunch of releases in the last few years,
but if you pull up the changelog on the website, you have to go back a
ways to find a release that's impressive.

> The big problem with the internet is too many people with minimal knowledge who want to jump straight into being teachers.

No, you're just being crazy again. Among the sane, the big hazard
with teaching is misrepresentation. Feigned wisdom. The pretense of
knowledge. Since there is a charybdis on the other side, where people
fail to heed your correct teachings because they don't take you
seriously, it's a hazard even if you're not trying to mislead.

So what did this guy say. Did he say, "I'm a big expert, I've studied
hundreds of Forth systems in detail, and I'm here to tell you
authoritatively that SwiftForth is the absolute best"?

He said nothing like that. He only has a "couple weeks" of knowledge
about SwiftForth. He describes what he found about the system, he
doesn't try to draw any conclusions for you. There is no reason to be
offended by this kind of 'teaching'.

... I'm not defending him because he used color-theme-goldenrod, and
therefore must have incredibly good taste. He also has those grey line
numbers, so there's probably something secretly wrong with him.

From I can see he is self employed and has his own company so who is he
shilling for? There is such a thing as being excited about something
without being a shill.

Personally I started looking through the source of SwiftForth and find
it simpler and more understandable than anticipated so I'm a little
exited and I will be writing an article in one of my sites about it, but
that doesn't make me a shill.

Hugh you are your own worst enemy, there is not need to criticize
everyone that has a different opinion than your self. I know that there
are lots of thing I disagree with, but one cannot go around hitting back
at all the people one disagrees with, it just doesn't work, one ends up
being everyone's enemy.

This list is really becoming a burden with all the sniping and arguing,
I wish it would stop but it won't.

I understand what you are saying. I could do a little brown-nosing, and it wouldn't kill me, and then I could become an ANS-Forth programmer and live happily-ever-after here on comp.lang.forth.

Actually, it would kill me. Where I come from, a brown-noser is called a "puto" --- selling one's integrity is very bad --- I could never bring myself to do that!

For another thing, I wouldn't be able to compete against the homosexual community. They are super-duper brown-nosers! I am not creative enough to think up a term such as: "unreasonable awesomeness" --- I would never be anything more than a second-tier ANS-Forth programmer --- first-tier ANS-Forth programmers such as John Passaniti, Julien Fondren and Dave Goehrig would look down on me as a junior-league brown-noser.

Mostly though, it wouldn't work anyway. Way back in 2009 Elizabeth Rather and Stephen Pelc said that I was not an ANS-Forth programmer and never would become an ANS-Forth programmer. The reason why they said this, is that they knew that I could program in Forth. They knew about MFX. They are deeply afraid of Forth programmers! There is no way in the world that they will ever accept an actual Forth programmer in the ANS-Forth cult --- not even if I pretended to be gay and I said that they were: "unreasonably awesome" --- they would know that I was faking, and that I do actually know how to program in Forth.

Good luck with that article that you are writing, praising SwiftForth! I doubt that you can think up any term that compares to: "unreasonable awesomeness." At best, you will be grudgingly accepted as a second-tier ANS-Forth programmer --- you don't have what it takes to be a first-tier ANS-Forth programmer --- you're not gay, and you can't fake it.

Like I said you are your own worst enemy. Here you are making a mountain
out of a mole hill as the saying goes.

I said nothing about brown nosing, you are making that up, I am not
brown nosing, making what I believe is true statement is not brown
nosing, brown nosing is making statements to incur someones favor which
I'm not trying to do. I'm not asking you to brown nose anyone or
anything, so where did that come from?

You have this unending disagreement with E Rather, fine that is a
personal thing. Did she write SwiftForth? You know the answer which is
no, so is my comment on the simplicity of SwiftForth praise on her? The
answer is again no, did I say that everything about Forth Inc. is
wonderful and peachy again the answer is no, I made a comment on a
specific topic.

Forth Inc and MPE like any other Corporation has good and bad things
about them, its the same with people, mentioning one good thing is not
taking their side on everything else, life isn't that simple, it's not
just Black or White there are all shades in-between.

The article on Forth I will write is not about any one product, it's
about Forth in general and some of the software available and their
features, Yes I will mention SwiftForth, and VFX Forth, so what? they
are players in the area of interest along with many other players.

It is said that insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and
expecting different results.

I don't give up on people without a reasonable effort otherwise most
people on this list would be on my kill list. Only after a reasonable
effort would I move on. I have five persons on my kill list and three of
of them is obvious, intense hatred for a race, and posting in Arabic
which is spamming, and just lack of civility along with a constant
barrage of idiotic comments.

Reasonable effort? Really?

Is there anyone here who doubts the trollishness if not the insanity of
Hugh?

Rickman never posts Forth code on comp.lang.forth, and there is no evidence to indicate that he knows Forth above the novice level. So, why does he spend so much time posting messages on comp.lang.forth, which seem to primarily involve calling me insane?

Rickman is a troll. He enjoys taunting people to make them angry so they do a little dance for him. That is why he is on comp.lang.forth despite an almost complete lack of knowledge of Forth programming.

I blame Elizabeth Rather --- she attracts twits and creeps (Rickman, Julien Fondren, Alex McDonald, etc. ) --- so long as they support her claim of being the "leading expert" of Forth, and they never say anything negative about ANS-Forth, she supports them in using comp.lang.forth as a platform for their trollish behavior.

John Passaniti will be forever linked to Elizabeth Rather --- the fact that he has left comp.lang.forth doesn't diminish the fact that Elizabeth Rather gave him 100% support when he was on comp.lang.forth --- that will never be forgotten!

I agree with you 100% on that point. I am never responding directly to
prickman again ... he offers little of positive value, but actively
pursues and thrives on the frustration and discomfort of others. I
have absolutely nothing more to say to him or about him.

Hugh, I consider you to be my friend (at least in the "internet" sense
of the word), and I have never doubted your sincerity. I have learned
quite a lot by reading your many posts here and elsewhere. However,
your frequent vitriolic excursions here are simply annoying, even to
someone who is not easily annoyed and considers you as a friend. I
will never stop reading what you have to say, because a portion of
what you offer here is of value (at least to me). My humble request
from you (as a "friend") would be to try harder to accentuate the
positive, and to not get so bogged down by the negative. Your
abilities impress me, and it annoys me to see you in constant and
unnecessary wars of words with others ... so much time and energy are
wasted ... time and energy that could have been put to positive use,
impressing me and others even more.

Sincerely,

Mike B.

Thanks for your encouragement, friend! :-)

I will try harder to focus on the positive. I wrote an early-binding MACRO: and STRING-STACK.4TH in ANS-Forth --- I felt good when I was writing that code, because I enjoy writing Forth code, especially when it does something never done before --- talking about my code on comp.lang.forth just irks me though, because everybody takes this as a cue to remind me that only Elizabeth Rather can grant me status as an Forth programmer, and she isn't going to.

I should not be so emotionally involved in Forth. This is foolish, because Forth has been dead for decades. If I tell computer programmers that I program in Forth, they typically think that I am mispronouncing "Fortran" --- they got their CS degree and never even heard of Forth --- or, if they have heard of it, they think that it became obsolete in 1994, and that Forth and Pascal were both shoved aside by C because they weren't any good.

The guys on the 6502 forum (including yourself) are in a similar situation. Realistically, the 6502 has been dead since the mid 1990s. It is not going to make a comeback! You guys don't get upset about this though --- you just have fun writing 6502 assembly-language programs for obsolete computers (ye olde Atari-800, Apple-IIc, Commodore-64, etc.) typically being run in simulators --- it is just a hobby, and so long as nobody takes a hobby too seriously, a hobby is a good way to relax after work.

Watching television is not only a waste of time, but it causes dementia. Programming in Forth and/or 6502 assembly-language is a waste of time, but it doesn't cause dementia, so it is a big step up from television --- just don't take the hobby too seriously --- anguishing over the failure of these programming languages irks the mind.

Also he should study "principles of web design" before attempting
to funk his site up.
Till that time obligatory plain html, which allows us to decide
whether his information is any good.
If I can't increase the font size to be readable without forced
into horizontal scolling it is thumbs down from me.

And here I thought that the big problem with the internet was too many
disaffected trolls with axes to grind. Who knew?

No, the problem with the Internet is too many who are happy to have a
battle of wits with unarmed opponents.

I'm the only one who almost can't read the post because of
background and foreground color (gray font on black background) ?
I tried to mark the text with my mouse to invert the text, but
it still remain almost unreadable to me.

No, it's not just you.

Andrew.
