#56198 — Mecrisp Forth Startup

SubjectMecrisp Forth Startup
Message-ID<ob14p7$vvp$1@dont-email.me>
I recall a couple of years ago I worked with Mecrisp Forth on a TI ARM
launchpad. The hardest part was just getting the durn thing installed
and all the support on the PC working. Now I want to use an MSP430
target (it has a built in display) and I am having exactly the same sort
of problems.

Aside from the issues of TI having somewhat fragmented documentation (or
maybe I just can't follow instructions in my dotage) I never got the USB
driver installed under Windows 8 (or was that on my Vista machine?) To
make it work back then I ended up using a raspberry pi as a remote
target interface. It worked, I got the work done and all was well. But
it left a bad taste in my mouth, mostly from the problems getting the TI
tools to let me burn the Mecrisp image to the target but also the lack
of documentation surrounding Mecrisp.

This time it is like a trip down déjà vu lane (although it is more like
déjà vécu, having lived through it before). I don't know if I will have
problems installing the emulator driver because I can't download it.
The TI site has a form you must fill out to assure you are not going to
ship the tool to an export controlled country. I do that and click all
the buttons on the next two pages, but a download never happens. I've
tried two browsers so I'm pretty sure it is the TI site.

I finally found a TI web page that supports flashing the board and even
flashed the flash tool! So I can install Mecrisp now, but I still need
to figure out what I need to do to talk to it. That at least is pretty
well documented in the readme file. It looks like the command line is
connected to the serial port that goes through the emulator interface. :)

I got an email about this. Someone else was able to download the file
just fine. So I tried it with a third browser and it worked. What are
the odds?

This stuff can drive you nuts! So, right now I am focusing on the sound
of the dove outside.

Notwithstanding the issues I had with TI in finding good information on
setting up and using their tools, the rest of getting Mecrisp up on the
MSP-EXP430FR4133 board was easy. I had PuTTY already installed to talk
to the serial port (even though that has some issues coping with the
adjustments I've made to accommodate a laptop screen, the "do it" button
is very nearly out of the dialog box!). Mecrisp uses the "application"
UART provided by the built in debugger (although the Mecrisp readme file
could state this rather than giving pin numbers which then have to be
traced on a hard to read schematic). So it all just worked.

There don't seem to be any built in support for the LCD on the board.
So I guess I'll have to write that myself and can donate it back to the
Mecrisp base if I can figure out how to do that. So now I need to check
out some of the details of using the MSP430 under Mecrisp. :)

Anyone know if there is a Mecrisp user group? I wonder if it would be
useful to start a Yahoo group for this if there isn't one already?

Hi Rick,

I am not too often on c.l.f, but occassionally I have a look.

Here is it: mecrisp-2.0.5/launchpad-fr4133/display.txt

There used to be a mailing list, but after two years of silence,
I deleted it. Nowadays Mecrisp users meet at the Jeelabs forum:

Thanks, I found that eventually. I had originally only looked for it in
the binary load. Lots of constants I see. I'll need to learn how the
peripheral on the chip works.

I created a Yahoo group for Mecrisp users. If you are using Mecrisp or
are interested in using Mecrisp you can discuss your project, usage and
ideas at the link below.

https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/MecrispForth/info

I'm thinking not all Mecrisp users use c.l.f. Now all I have to do is
reach them. lol

Big mistake not requiring members to be approved, you are going to get
spammers.

Thank you for that reminder. I don't approve new members, but new
members' posts will be moderated until they are shown to not be
spammers. I don't think we will have much trouble with members needing
moderation other than excluding spammers. I'm not interested in the
work of moderating. I don't expect this group to attract too many
members, but you never know.

Moderating is not difficult, but spammers left on their own will create
many accounts and then bombard the list with spam, one can't delete them
quickly enough if the can create a new account without any barriers.

Time will tell, I have belonged to groups that were rendered useless
until the owners started moderating new user comments and new accounts.
I'm one of the owners of a list with over 10000 members and its not bad
to keep an eye on things.

I already explained to you that I have moderation on new members. I
have a dozen Yahoo groups that work this way and hardly hear from
spammers. When they realize their posts will be moderated they go away.
I even took over a group that was dead from spammers. I turned on
moderation on new members and killed any existing members who spammed.
After a while the spamming all stopped and even the new attempts dropped
off to nearly nothing.

I will say that over the years most of the groups have gone into disuse.
Mostly because the topics have become less interesting or obsolete. I
have an ArmForth group that is essentially visited by one poster who
simply uploads his work to the files section. He never really documents
his work so not many people utilize it, but some do. Once in a while
someone asks a question about his stuff and I don't think I've seen a
reply.

I'm hoping the Mecrisp group will have a bit more success. I'd like to
see Mecrisp acquire more documentation. Some of that can come from
conversations about what people find hard to use or understand.

Couldn't you set it up on Google groups instead? World+Dog has a google
account, but we're all trying to get away from Yahoo, running and screaming!

I haven't used Google groups in years. What is so great about Google
groups?

Blecch, it puts you under the google octopus. If you've got to use a
huge media site, I'd suggest Reddit.

I have a group on groups.io and it's a pleasure to work with it, it's
very responsive.

I'll look into this, but the Yahoo group is up and I'm not interested in
putting a lot of time into running a group. If you would like to
create a group on group.io and I don't find it a PITA, I would be happy
to let you run the group.

I met Terry Porter on an IRC chat, server : irc.freenode.net; channel:
##tech40+. He has started an online documentation page for Mecrisp. He
is big on the STM32 line and has done a pretty good job of documenting
that. I plan to help document on his site the boards I am using, the
MSP-EXP430FR4133 launchpad and the TI/Stellaris launchpad. I also have
a couple of STM32 boards, but they are still in the packages and have no
display.

Anyone who would like to work with Mecrisp should check out his docs page.

http://128.199.141.78/index.html

He has also written a program that reads a standard ARM register
description file and spits out an include file in Forth defining all the
registers and fields with standard names. I believe this is what
Matthias is using in his programs.

Well one of the advantages of groups.io beside it being very responsive,
and no Yahoo account needed to join is that they can migrate a Yahoo
group, comments and users, so it's pretty simple to move even a very
large group.

I created a group at group.io you can take a look at it;

Let me know so I can either migrate the Yahoo group over or delete the
group.

I joined your group. I like the user interface. No offence to Rickman but
I don't have a lot of confidence that Yahoo Groups will be around much longer!
