It is better to have an optimizing compiler.
The technique that I described (having a lot of primitives and writing them in assembly-language) is 1970s technology --- I agree that having too many words makes it hard for the programmer to remember all of them, and if they have clunky names that is a big hint that the problem has gotten out of hand.
I like NIP and TUCK though because they have easy-to-remember names --- the cliches of SWAP DROP and SWAP OVER aren't easy to remember --- it took me a minute to think of how I would do NIP and TUCK if I didn't have them.
I have these too:
: rip ( a b c -- b c ) \ like NIP except for the third item
rot drop ;
: ruck ( a b c -- c a b c ) \ like TUCK except under the third item
-rot rover ;

This isn't necessarily going to result in faster code on a modern processor anyway. The x86 has only 32KB of L1 code-cache. In an ITC system, it is best to have all of the primitives in L1 code-cache. This means that you can't get carried away with writing primitives. If some particular primitive isn't used very much, then using it at all will cause code-cache thrashing because when it is used it will bump more useful primitives out of the code-cache.

EXIT ELSE (which sometimes appears in real code) is logically redundant
as it compiles a jump that is never executed.
( flag) IF A EXIT ELSE B THEN
It should be written:
( flag) IF A EXIT THEN B
which reduces to:
( flag) IF A END B

So if the compiler detected ; before THEN then the slot could be used for something else. A 2 cell do kind of loop, where the cells are in the code? END is fine.

Assuming you can make use of the slot (which EXIT ELSE would normally prevent code reaching), what control structure do you need that Forth does not already provide?

I think EXIT-THEN would be the best name. Because this is exactly what it does. I would of course never use it because I already have EXIT and THEN separately.

AGAIN THEN is exactly what it does. You use REPEAT because Forth made the decision it makes more sense mnemonically and practically. EXIT THEN has no mnemonic value. Neither does OVER + SWAP. They are cliches - the term Brodie used to describe a common juxtaposition of words.

It's basically useful for smaller source definitions (for example if you want to write word definition on one line). RECURSE ; \ 0 .. -- (print all values on stack up to zero) 0 1 2 3 4 5 test -> output: 5 4 3 2 1 Regards, -Helmar

Disagree. The action is to terminate. ;THEN suggests the opposite...

First block looks better for me - btw. I like that you use Eaker-Case words without syntax control, because
: OF POSTPONE OVER POSTONE = POSTPONE IF POSTPONE DROP ; IMMEDIATE
or using FreeForth ideas (here HelFORTH):
: OF` OVER` =` IF` DROP` ;
or using my new (not yet released version of HelFORTH):
: OF ` OVER ` = ` IF ` DROP ; IMMEDIATE
Regards,
-Helmar

The ways to make "macros" are arbitrary...

This wouldn't. I think using OF for this word is not advisable, regardless of whether it's terminated by END or ;THEN because of existing usage. -- Alex

"ENDOF" needs the special values on stack (for managing to find "ENDCASE"), but "OF" is usually implemented in the way you see above... The more complete things (without syntax control), are : CASE` 0 ; \ CS: -- 0 : OF` OVER` =` IF` DROP` ; \ n1 n2 -- n|- CS: -- p : >OF` OVER` <` IF` DROP` ; \ n1 n2 -- n|- CS: -- p : <OF` OVER` >` IF` DROP` ; \ n1 n2 -- n|- CS: -- p : RANGE 2 PICK -ROT BETWEEN ; \ n1 n2 n3 -- n f : RANGE-OF` RANGE` IF` DROP` ; \ n1 n2 n3 -- n|- CS: -- p : ENDOF` ELSE` ; \ -- CS: p1 -- p2 : ENDCASE` ?DUP AND: THEN` RECURSE ; \ -- CS: 0 ... -- (sorry for the idiolect... it's a bit FreeForth and mainly HelFORTH...) ENDCASE is generating the THEN to match the IF generated by OF. I believe the original implementation of CASE ENDCASE is similar to (where ]] [[ indicates POSTPONEd words) : CASE 0 ; IMMEDIATE : OF 1+ >R ]] OVER = IF [[ R> ; IMMEDIATE : ENDOF >R ]] ELSE [[ R> ; IMMEDIATE : ENDCASE ]] DROP [[ 0 ?DO ]] THEN [[ LOOP : IMMEDIATE -- Alex

Implementation differs, as my implementation puts a 0 (zero) to stack to determinate where ENDOF has to stop action. It's legal to do so, as the ELSE-sys on compilation stack should not be zero usually... In my case the ENDOF is indeed only syntactical sugar for ELSE. Regards, -Helmar
