Apart from the hundreds of apps that come with 4tH, there are countless ones that are just nog general enough to include them. In my professional work I use it mainly for ETL applications. For that purpose I got XML, CSV and custom readers, XLS, RTF, LaTeX, ODS, HTML and JSON writers and it helps that nowadays 4tH comes with a tiny DBMS. Hans Bezemer

Recently I had a problem with the test fixture. To debug the issues I needed to create a loop so the events could be scoped. I was able to write a short program and have the test tech load it the same way he loads the test fixture program and collect the data remotely. I think this was easier to do remotely than if I had been using another language. -- Rick C

People use Forth for writing programs that do something useful. :-) 2.) People use ANS-Forth for hanging out on comp.lang.forth braying about how they set the standard for Forth, and how all Forth programmers depend upon them for leadership. If you want to stop being a troll, join the first group --- write a program that does something useful! Or write a program that does something useless --- my first-ever ANS-Forth program was LowDraw.4th that calculates the probabilities for various low-draw poker strategies --- this is despite the fact that low-draw poker was pretty much obsolete at the time. Note that writing an ANS-Forth program, such as I did with LowDraw.4th etc., will not make you an ANS-Forth programmer --- I'm still not an ANS-Forth programmer, 8 years later --- I will never be an ANS-Forth programmer. The only way to make money with programming is in micro-controllers --- desktop-computer software is always given away for free --- so a useful Forth program (assuming that "useful" implies making money) has to be done in a non-standard micro-controller Forth.

Of course there are other ways of being a troll which Hugh can teach a class in. But lately he has been mostly civil and not prone to his rants - aside from the above snide remark he has been discussing Forth like a normal person. -- Rick C
