#47797 — Pentium colorForth and colorforth.com

Fromanton@mips.complang.tuwien.ac.at (Anton Ertl)

SubjectPentium colorForth and colorforth.com
Message-ID<2016Jun3.153400@mips.complang.tuwien.ac.at>
I recently searched for machine Forth for Intel, which works with
simple expanding native code generation (like swiftForth with
optimization turned off), yet most words expand to quite short
sequences. I did not find it at the time, but yesterday I came across
the URL for that page, and while colorforth.com no longer works, the
page still exists on the wayback machine. Aparently colorforth.com
worked as recently as in March.

Anyway, the page is
<https://web.archive.org/web/20160310155430/http://colorforth.com/forth.html>

and it's title is "Pentium ColorForth"; googling for the title did not
bring up any other mirrors, however.

If you find the source, I would be interested in looking at it and
playing with it.

Color Forth was an interesting Forth but I always thought it would not
be possible to make it a popular Forth, why? Because so many persons
specially males suffer from color blindness, and it's too primitive for
some persons taste. Of course too primitive is a bogus argument, this is
Forth, it can be expanded fairly easily.

I have been looking for the source of MachineForth in various
implementations and have found only tree copies, for ARM, F21, and for
EP16 CPU. Forth the F21 which is a Forth CPU MachineForth is so small
and simple that I want to use it as an assembler for FPGA based Forth
CPUs, the F21 version is barely over a page long.

So if anyone has any versions of MachineForth, I would appreciate a
copy, the f21 version I have is a web page listing so I'm not sure it's
complete.

I would point out that is is possible to replace colour indication though font attributes. Bold, italic, small caps, under and over lined font attributes should essentially be sufficient for replacing colourized text. Also simply different fonts can be used.

in the above list Rainbow Forth is missing: https://github.com/flagxor/rainbowforth

Sadly, it hasn't "if", "then", "for" and "next" words.

Ok, it seems I didn't remember correctly, there are "if" and "then" but not "for" and "next" properly saing, even if, maybe, they can be somehow emulated.

Screen 19 has DO and LOOP

So it seems that rainbowforth is more conventional than colorforth.

Not if your application of Ayn Rand is anything like your application of Forth.

I think what killed colorforth was the fact that it's a variation on an relatively obscure language. On top of that the interface was absolutely dreadful and didn't cater to the public... at all.

The concept was powerful though. Replace linux freebsd dataabse appserver and all that with 1 piece of software. I hope Chuck is ok. There should be a government grant for him to document and share his genius. A gem.
