What I mean is that an ANS Forth program cannot. You can write a
program that does some or all of these things on some Forth systems,
but the program will not be an ANS Forth compliant program. And there
can be compliant ANS Forth systems where that program will not work as
intended.

No. A standard system has to run standard programs, but there is no
obligation to produce errors for non-standard programs.

Some systems have difficulties to implement files (e.g. because they have
just 8k of flash available), that doesn't stop us from defining how files
work.

>NAME ( xt -- nt | 0 )  TOOLS EXT

Search the name token nt corresponding to xt. If the name cannot be found,
0 is returned. An ambiguous condition exists if the input is not an xt. If
there's a SYNONYM for the definition of xt, either the synonym or the
original name may be found.

Reference implementation (useless, but conforming):

: >NAME  drop 0 ;

This is now pretty easy to define, as we already have nt as type in
Forth-2012.

If you can convert from xt to nt, then you can convert from xt to
whatever and nt is turned into. The excuses to avoid using the xt
are IMHO quality of implementation issues (slight tongue in cheek).

If you want the name of the word, and counted strings are "a bad thing
(TM)" then we need

>word-name   \ xt -- caddr len

which allows for systems that store names in reverse order, or
in other address spaces or the count byte is max 15 with four flag
bits.

If the relation was 1:1, then yes, the nt would be useless. However,
thanks to aliases, synonyms, and :NONAME there may be 0-n nts for one
xt; and thanks to words with non-default non-immediate compilation
semantics such as S", there may be two xts for one nt.

We already have

15.6.2.1909.40 NAME>STRING ( nt -- c-addr u )

>which allows for systems that store names in reverse order, or
>in other address spaces or the count byte is max 15 with four flag

Same for NAME>STRING, although I think that a system where the count
byte is max 15 will have troubles satisfying the standard requirements
for name length (31 characters).

We also have

15.6.2.1909.10 NAME>COMPILE ( nt -- x xt )
15.6.2.1909.20 NAME>INTERPRET ( nt -- xt | 0 )

Would you add composites

: >word-comp >name name>compile ;
: >word-int  >name name>interpret ;

If you have a system where the xt allows access to everything, make
xt=nt, and then >NAME becomes a noop. No need for >WORD-NAME etc.

Oh, Anton, your wriggling is getting desparate. You can always
optimise one thing at the expense of another. Most systems optimise
the xt for EXECUTE, as you well know.

We have some functions for nt, like NAME>STRING. If your xt == nt, you can
define >NAME as synonym for NOOP, and be done. Some other systems have xt
!= nt, and want a separate opaque type for the name field.

NAME>STRING gives the same flexibility.

I go by what you used to state, in particular the reasons you gave for
disliking name tokens.

>When/where did I say that >BODY is evil. I do, however, believe that
>just having >BODY standardised is better than the Fig-Forth situation.

I'm not sure what that comparison is supposed to tell us.

Fig-Forth has the PFA as the one token to rule them all, and words

NFA pfa --- nfa
        Convert the parameter. field address of a definition to its name
        field.

LFA pfa --- lfa
        Convert the parameter field address of a dictionary definition to
        its link field address.

CFA    pfa --- cfa
        Convert the parameter field address of a definition to its code
        field address.

PFA nfa --- pfa
        Convert the name field address of a compiled definition to its
        parameter field address.

with ' and (FIND) producing the PFA, and EXECUTE taking a CFA.

If EXECUTE took the PFA, this would be a pretty good example of "one
token to rule them all".

However, that reflects fig-Forth, where there is a 1:1:1:1 relation
between name field, link field, code field, and parameter field.

In modern Forth systems, with :NONAME, aliases/synonyms, compilation
semantics and interpretation semantics, "one token to rule them all"
restricts implementation options (or, alternatively, leads to
composite words like COMP-EXECUTE and INTERP-COMPILE,); that's not
necessarily bad, but I have not seen a convincing argument for it yet.

>Some form of >NAME would be useful, but there are systems in which
>this is difficult to do.

Which is the reason why the name token is a more natural basis for
accessing all the functionality of a named word: The text interpreter
has to be able to find out interpretation semantics and compilation
semantics from the name, so that functionality must be present.
Getting to the string must also work (for the comparison in
SEARCH-WORDLIST and for WORDS), and accessing immediacy (for FIND),
too.

Sure, one can design a system where the name token acts also as an
execution token (e.g. current development Gforth), but there is
little, if any, advantage to that, and anyway, we don't want to force
all systems to change their implementation in that way (much more
useful features have been attacked with the argument that
standardizing the feature would restrict implementations).

Since the xt is defined by the standard to be an opaque type,
what the unique number actually represents is up to the

Sure.  Two issues:

1) Systems already implement xt in some way, and that way may not
allow them to access all the functionality of a named word. Do you
want to force them to change.

2) For words like S" (if we want to keep them, and want to allow to
tick them), the way to go is to have an xt0 representing the
interpretation semantics and xt1 xt2 representing the compilation
semantics (where xt1 is different from xt0). One can implement access
to all functionality of S" from both xt0 and xt1, but does one want to
do that? Seems to be a pretty strong restriction of systems to me,
for what gain?

You have exerted enough pressure on VFX that I really ought to answer
yes to that question. <grin>

That's a confusion of specification and implementation.

The functionality of S" and how to define literal strings is an
important discussion. The recogniser argument has merit, but I still
do not find the recogniser proposal to be "clean" yet. My objections
are aesthetic rather than logical. It just doesn't feel right and
sufficiently Forth-ish yet.

We may find a better approach to recognizers (e.g., the idea from
<2015May13.163016@mips.complang.tuwien.ac.at> looks worth pursuing),
but even what we currently have appears to be good enough to allow us
to get rid of S" and friends.

That link didn't lead me to anything apparently relevant.

Indeed. It's just a token. That it's called an "execution" token
is just historic, one assumes. One could rename it to "access
token" if preferred, since that's what it is.

No. It's called an "execution token" because that's the one actually
valid use of it: to be passed to EXECUTE. All other uses are of lower
priority. On the whole, executing an xt is the most important thing a
Forth does, and the one that should have the most priority for efficiency.

I agree on this one. XT should be an execution token. Wether the code
there performs what is expected or not, it's another problem. I admit
that sometimes I use XT as an address (for example I often look at the
code with kind of: ' myword 32 dump where I use tick to obtain the
CFA) but the primary goal is to be able to execute the xt.

There are systems where it's not easy to find other things about the word
given the XT. But I don't know if the standard provide any other tools
for that. A name token would be a good solution, but I certainly want
a tick that is optimized and fast and not derived from a name token with
some other navigation after.

I'm fine with that, to be honest. The point is simply that the token
should be the "atom" which can be "split" with other words to reveal
other information about the word.

xt --> link field
xt --> flags
xt --> run-time semantics
xt --> interpretation semantics
xt --> compilation semantics

Furthermore, a method is required to be able to associate the
three types of semantics with a single word. And therein is the
problem: A *single* word has up to three different behaviours,
but the standard does not fully cover getting/setting and
compiling for those modes.

How to fix it?

I like:

set-comp ( xt1 xt2 -- )
The compilation semantics of the word identified by xt2 shall be
set to xt1. During compilation, FIND , tick, COMPILE, et al shall
return xt1.

set-int ( xt1 xt2 -- )
The interpretation semantics of the word identified by xt2 shall be
set to xt1. During interpretation, FIND , tick et al shall return
xt1.

>comp ( xt -- cxt )
Given an xt, return the xt representing the compilation semantics.

>int ( xt -- ixt )
Given an xt, return the xt representing the interpretation semantics.

Words like S" could then become something like:

: push-s" ( string" -- caddr len )
  \ copy a quote delimited string to a temporary area, and push
  \ the address and length of the string to the stack.
  \ used from the command line in interpretation mode.
  ( code omitted )
;

: comp-s" ( string" -- )
  \ copy a quote delimited string to the current definition
  \ and compile code such that the strings' address and length
  \ is pushed to the stack at runtime.
  \ used to compile a string in compilation mode
  ( code omitted )
;

: s" ( string" -- | -- caddr len )
; immediate

\ associate s"'s interpretation behaviour with push-s"
' push-s"  ' s"  set-int

\ associate s"'s compilation behaviour with comp-s"
' comp-s"  ' s"  set-comp

Note that s" has no executable code of its own. It's merely a
wrapper for the interpretation and compilation semantics.

I would then suggest that:

*    ' s" returns the xt of s" in all cases (state=0 or 1) [1]
*  ['] s" returns the xt of s" in all cases (state=0 or 1) [1]
* FIND in immediate mode (state=0) returns the interpretation xt
* FIND in compilation mode (state=1) returns the compilation xt

[1] It is then up to the programmer to use >int or >comp to get the
appropriate behaviour. Some words will have the same xt regardless
of the mode [2]. For example: drop in this case >comp and >int would
leave the return the same xt as was passed in.

[2] Optimising compilers could theoretically have different xts for
compilation and interpretation modes for nearly all words.
For example: DROP - in interpretation mode, the ixt might point to
simple code that drops top of stack. In compilation mode, it might
point to the compiler for DROP that does some optimisation and
emits (compiles) some code.

I was "sort of" with you up to here. The idea of making FIND and '
state-smart is going to lead to many mistakes. It is also horrible
in application usage. Several times, we have had to write simulators
for tokenised systems that can both interpret and compile command
streams. These all end up with one or more tables for token
dispatch:

create dispatch-table
  ' dotoken0 ,
  ' dotoken1 ,
  ...

Having to have separate xts doubles the size of the table and forces
people to go through contortions to get the compilation xt, for
example

: token,
  >in @   ' ,   >in !
  state on ' , state off
;

create ugly-dispatch-table
  token-pair, dotoken0
  token-pair, dotoken1
  ...

and then there are the words with no interpretation semantics or
no compilation semantics and the systems that refuse to tick a word.
It is just so much simpler to use a system that provides a single xt
for all words.

Here's the definition of S" in VFX Forth:

: S"            \ Comp: "ccc<quote>" -- ; Run: -- c-addr u
\ *G Describe a string. Text is taken up to the next double-quote
\ ** character. The address and length of the string are returned.
  [char] " parse >syspad
;
comp: ( xt -- ) drop  postpone (s") ",  discard-sinline  ;

The colong definition is the interpretation behaviour of S".

COMP: generates a nameless word that is the compiler for the previous
(latest) word. We also have SET-COMPILER ( xt -- ) which sets xt as
the compiler of the latest word; SET-COMPILER is mostly used in
defining words.

You really don't need much more for optimised native code systems.
What I want to emphasise is that a single xt is all that is needed,
and at times that single xt is very useful in applications as well
as in the system.

Have another read :-) In my post above, ' and ['] would return the
"true" (for want of a better word) XT of the word being ticked.

FIND would return the interpretation XT of the the word if in
interpretation mode, because the chances are that's what will
be directly used (i.e. passed to EXECUTE in the outer interpreter).

Conversely, FIND would return the compilation XT of a word in
compile mode, because it's probably going to be compiled.

> Having to have separate xts doubles the size of the table and forces
> people to go through contortions to get the compilation xt

This is true. But what are the alternatives?

I believe the following to be true:

* Words have a single name;
* A single word can have different behaviours depending on system state
  (i.e. interpreting, compiling, executing);
* It may be desirable, or essential to access the different behaviour
  modes of a single word in order to either compile it, or execute it.
* It is not possible to access all of the behaviour modes (semantics)
  in standard Forth code, because whilst the standard recognises their
  existence, it provides no tools to explicitly access them.

So, I'm trying to come up with a way in which a single word can have
different behaviours. The most Forthy way seems to be to write each
behaviour as a separate definition(s) (factoring) and "plug them in"
to the word in question.

> and then there are the words with no interpretation semantics or
> no compilation semantics and the systems that refuse to tick a word.

I believe that systems that refuse to tick a word contravene the
standard. They contravene 6.1.0070 (Forth 200x, 14.5):

6.1.0070 ' "tick" CORE
( "hspacesiname" - - xt )
Skip leading space delimiters. Parse name delimited by a space.
Find name and return xt, the execution token for name. An ambiguous
condition exists if name is not found.
When interpreting, ' xyz EXECUTE is equivalent to xyz.

' XYZ EXECUTE cannot be "equivalent to XYZ" if ' refuses to supply an
XT. Therefore, there inference (for it is not explicitly stated)
is clear: A *word* must object to its being invoked in a particular
state, not ancilliary words. I believe that systems that do not
produce an XT for a given word violate the above. However, we shouldn't
allow ourselves to get side-tracked on that! It's a QOI issue :-)

Okay, but how would I access (to say, compile) the compilation
behaviour (the code after comp:)? Is there a way to do that in
VFX?

It occurs to me that most vendors will have come across this
issue many times and have home-grown their own solutions.
