The raspberry in an embedded setting is a single user system. Making that single user a sudoer doesn't make sense. I would suggest to remove sudo altogether. Then when you have to do a system action, just do it as superuser, aka root. Make that terminal a red background and be careful. A lot of caveats disappear. A security tool requiring to absorb 10 pages of information doesn't make a system safer for novices. The caveats for being a super user are super simple. You can do everything, so watch out! > >Thanks :) Groetjes Albert > >-- > >Rick -- Albert van der Horst, UTRECHT,THE NETHERLANDS Economic growth -- being exponential -- ultimately falters. albert@spe&ar&c.xs4all.nl &=n http://home.hccnet.nl/a.w.m.van.der.horst

The caveats for being a super user > are super simple. You can do everything, so watch out! I don't know about 10 pages of info. Using SUDO is easier than learning how to switch between user and superuser. One of the SUDO references said it was used on systems where root is a locked account. Sudo lets you execute one command as superuser to save the trouble of changing your login or when it is impossible such as when root is a locked account. I may not have the words exactly right, but I think using Sudo is not one of my real concerns right now. Thanks anyway. -- Rick

There is tool for shoveling data between socket, PTY and serial port. Socat can do quite interesting things. It can listen port, or connect to port or forward data to serial to tcp and many more things. Web page for Socat is http://www.dest-unreach.org/socat/ And it should be in repos also. See: > http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=9gLXfOA87zI Cool. Nice video, very well made. One problem I noticed this morning... I have a number of keyboards, but they are all old and most have PS2 connectors. I have some USB adapters that are just wire through connections which don't seem to work with the rPi. The one keyboard with a USB connector seems to work oddly. A few of the keys get remapped to different characters, most importantly the vertical bar (pipe character) displays as a #. Is this something on the rPi or is this keyboard somehow messed up? It is a Dell keyboard from a computer I salvaged from the trash. It worked ok until one day it wouldn't boot. I suspect that is why it went in the trash, it boots intermittently, rather than the keyboard being bad, but who knows? I guess I need to get a known good USB keyboard somewhere and try it. -- Rick

Have you tried 'sudo raspi-config' ? - 4 internationalisation options, - 13 change keyboard layout, - generic 105-key (Intl) PC, - English (US) or some such, because RPi uses by default an UK keyboard.. Here in the Netherlands we use US keyboards. The last time I used an UK keyboard was on my Amstrad-Schneider in 1986. Q: As I think that U a vowel I use 'an UK' or must it be 'a UK'. -- Coos CHForth, 16 bit DOS applications http://home.hccnet.nl/j.j.haak/forth.html

I don't know the "rule", but the purpose of using "an" is to not have two vowel sounds adjacent which are hard to say. In writing I'm not sure I give a crap, plus you need to consider if UK is pronounced YouKay or United Kindom. Finally I don't see where "Ay YouKay" (like AUK) is hard to say so it is all macht nichts to me. -- Rick

You don't get more, or different, packages. According to the man page for apt-get, it's a more intelligent version of upgrade: > dist-upgrade > dist-upgrade in addition to performing the function of upgrade, > also intelligently handles changing dependencies with new versions > of packages; apt-get has a "smart" conflict resolution system, and > it will attempt to upgrade the most important packages at the > expense of less important ones if necessary. The dist-upgrade > command may therefore remove some packages. Maybe the name means distinction in the sense of (mathematical set) difference, although if so, diff-upgrade would have been clearer.

Rick, as a NONexpert in FORTH nor *nix may I suggest: _The Debian Administrator's Handbook_ by Raphaƫl Hertzog and Roland Mas ( http://debian-handbook.info/ ) "Debian Reference" by Osamu Aoki ( https://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/debian-reference/ ) Assuming that current Linux and Windows versions of gforth are functionally equivalent that you first port your Forth program to the Windows version of gforth. That way you deal with only one new thing at a time. P.S. I predate the use of transistors in computers ;/
