I think it's really cool to finally start something with Forth on crowdfunding.
The time has come!
Now there are two donations. I hope more will come, just to see the increasing support of Forth.

After four days there are four donations only (and one is mine). Is it a
good estimate for level of Forth's popularity?

I would say not. I'd say it is more an indication of what Forth users
think of a hardware development project with no perceived connection to
the Forth language.

Simon has indicated that he is constructing new hardware to provide it
to a small segment that requires high reliability hardware, which
assumes that there are no other sources of reliable hardware. Other
than the claim that all other boards "are badly designed", he has
provided no explanation of why new hardware is needed.

So clearly, in contrast to his stated claim of wanting to make "Forth
the premier language of real time", this Indiegogo project is about
making "reliable" hardware.

Forth isn't so popular that any random appeal for money "to be used to promote
Forth" isn't instantly met?

Yep. There was the TIOBE thread. And the other hundred threads. But finally
we have irrefutable proof: Forth is dead! Pack up, everybody. I just dropped
my Forth projects in favor of mocl @ https://wukix.com/mocl .. which is still
going to require me to create interfaces in Java. Ew. Oh well, there's no
alternative now.

I bet I could make at least a million dollars with an Indigogo project intended
to make Perl the language of choice for women. And all I'd need to do is put
up a YouTube video of Schwern's keynote to YAPC2013 in which he yells SHUT UP
at the audience. Because the difference between a dead and a living language
is that in one you have to make your money by selling people products written
in the language, or otherwise by actually using the language, whereas in the
other you can just ask for money and get it.

The whole point of doing hardware is to have the tools to do projects. In fact I'm doing just that and will write them up as I complete them.

Have I mentioned that the LPC812 makes a neat little I2C peripheral? And if you need a lot of smarts the LPC1114 is even better. We currently support both.

We'd like to be an overnight success. But we don't have to be. We will keep making boards until something strikes the markets fancy. Because my goal is to make Forth the premier real time language.

Perhaps there will be more reasoning behind doing hardware if you also
provide the high-level API for I/O and all the peripherals you are
offering.

Furthermore I would be interested why none of the zillion boards of
e.g. Olimex fits the criterion for reliable, well designed hardware.

Lately the MSP430 Launchpad became popular. That board is designed
and distributed by the manufacturer of the chip. Innocent bystanders
automatically assume that a certain quality has been met.
Here in the Netherlands we have a number of successful applications
with this board.

Well if you would care to write one.....

We are team of 3. I do mostly hardware and application software and Clyde is doing Forths. Vic is providing mostly advice. Right now we are not targeting script kiddies. We are targeting people who can write software.

The high level API you want is a very significant effort and would not cover every situation. I prefer doing things the old fashioned way so I can actually get the code I want and fit it into the 1K free space available on the '812. Since there is not room in the '812 for such an API (nor the '1114) we would have to write the code to run on a PC/tablet/phone processor. And that puts us at the mercy of M'soft or Apple or Linux or what have you. It breaks our processor independence.

Rather than a general-purpose high-level API (not how Forth should work
anyway), provide working examples for all I/O of things that light up,
beep, or wiggle, and discuss your code in enough detail that they will
know how to get they results.

Please, please do NOT use Starting Forth as your model. If you are
selling to kids or computer newbies, it's not so bad, but you seem to be
talking about engineers, who will run in horror both at the cartoons and
the incredibly limited facilities.

Cheers,
Elizabeth

I am quite sure that is not true for hardware engineers. If the
system has advanced features in their area of interest, they don't care
how ridiculously easy and simple the interface looks. However,
you must promise / guarantee them some kind of 'escape hatch'.

For instance, the reason I was hooked to Forth was because I overheard
an older engineer say that Forth was an *interpreter* that allowed
in-line interactive *CODE definitions*, and that it was open source
(Well, that had no significance for me 35 years ago, it probably was more
that as a very poor student I didn't have any money to buy stuff).

Maybe you are not up-to-date with how horribly complex current software
and hardware has become. I would love to have a Forth that runs
on an e.g. a ZinQ board *and* allow full access to its special (parallel)
features, or a Windows Forth that allows programming a GUI in a
*really* simple 'Starting Forth' spirit!

Where are the 'Starting Forth' books for these two areas?

I haven't found a "Starting Forth" type reference for it yet, but my
understanding is that there is a GUI interface for Win32Forth. The one
who should be able to tell you more about it is posting here as
"visualforth@rocketmail.com", AKA Dirk Bruehl if I am not mistaken.

Thanks, that's a very interesting link, I installed it to have a look. VisualForth is a lot more advanced and professional than I remembered.
They have a number of quite advanced and inspiring demos that certainly
whet the appetite. Scintilla also looks good, and it is available for
Linux.

I don't like the reverse parameter and Windows specific calls and
the ':' in Neon. The first can be fixed I guess. One more task for
the rainy nights.

I couldn't do anything with the form editor. It's like a gleaming
Cadillac with the keys missing. Where are the Starting Forth-like
docs :-)

Marcel, long ago the same happened to me. That's why I upgraded ForthForm to VisualFORTH five years ago, after waiting in vain for ten years that something like VisualFORTH may be available.

Now VisualFORTH is available, and every now and then there will be an upgrade, normally after I have written a project with VisualFORTH which needed more functions. Recently I wrote the 4E4th-IDE using VisualFORTH. The 4E4th-IDE is an IDE especially designed for Forth targets, taking care of special Forth features. The goal of the 4E4th-IDE is to give an easy start for newbees programming microprocessors. The 4E4th-IDE has a "List Connections" menu which shows all available COM ports and automatically selects the target COM port, and it includes TI's MSP430 flasher, so 4e4th can be flashed onto TI's G2-LaunchPad within seconds.

Forth is a good language for automation. Therefore we have automated a lot inside VisualFORTH:

There is the "One-Click-Exe" - when coding is done, one click only is needed to totally compile an exe file which can be run on nearly all Windows versions and on Linux under Wine.

And there is a special feature to make arrays. You simply select the number of rows and coulombs you need to make an array of up to 256 buttons, pictures, etc.

Thanks for downloading VisualFORTH!

I have a couple of suggestions at first glance. I didn't see the link
for the starting document because the link to it is not obvious... at
least to me. You might want to have the link say something like,
"Starting Visual Forth Manual".

In the document you might want to add a short section at the beginning
describing what Visual Forth is for and what can be done with it. I've
scanned the document including the examples and I am still not sure just
what Visual Forth can do. I guess I'll have to try it out. :)

I was just going to ask if something like that already existed!
Where did you find it?

Well, that is somewhat obvious. It is however not obvious how to
set properties of all those objects, add bitmaps, label text and
such and make these appear for real :-)

This document is to find at http://www.visualforth.org/StartingVisualFORTH.pdf
Everything for a start is mentioned there - only the download process is different now. I will fix it asap

StartingVisualFORTH.pdf describes the properties, and the vF help-file explains even more. Please take a look at the help-file, go through the first samples, which needs only a few minutes, then let me know what is missing, please.

At the end of the vF help-file is a link to the ForthForm description, which explains the part which I took over from ForthForm.

I am sorry about that. My idea - which may have been stupid - was that somebodu who found this website will find further links, to, by scanning the text with his mouse. The appearance of http://www.visualforth.org/ is my personal taste.
I guess I now have to convince myself to make it more accessible.
Thanks for your hint!

I decided to describe the download process first, and then an introduction to VisualFORTH. In the appendix is a description how to install Win32Forth.

Since the download process has changed, I have to change this document anyway. I better should make three documents out of it, starting with a description what VisualFORTH is good for. I was sure that only people who know Visual Basic will find VisualFORTH, people like me, which enjoyed VB and are looking for a Visual Forth.

VisualFORTH doesn't do very much. It only makes construction of GUIs easy.
The rest of it is Forth, using Win32Forth as development system. That means, the vast number of Win32Forth words may be used to develop a program, and the front end or HMI is done by VisualFORTH. The trick is, that the exe-file is made under VisualFORTH, so the programmer has not to deal with all this Windows stuff. The programmer only needs to know Forth and this simple small number of VisualFORTH buttons, to get great work done. There are some examples showing how it works. A tutorial would be great, and I am glad that finally somebody asks for it.

Good idea!
To make a button work, just type in at properties the word which you like to be executed with this button.

Yes, I see that. I understand that everyone has their ideas of what
they prefer. Web design is an art and not many agree. :)

Sure, the "Purpose" section doesn't have to be first, but it should be
near the beginning and easy to find.

I quickly saw that you link code to a button by typing the words into
the edit box. Pretty nice!

I'm still looking for a solution to my terminal display problem and was
thinking this program might help me with that. If nothing else I can
look at your sources to learn how you designed Visual Forth which is a
windows app.

Thanks
