I don't know what you are talking about in regard to a "stalker/attacker in Hawaii."

Anyway, Elizabeth Rather doesn't have any stalkers. Celebrities have stalkers --- Elizabeth Rather is a salesperson for a second-rate compiler for a programming language that died out in 1994 --- she doesn't have stalkers.

All I care about is Forth. I believe that Forth can never succeed until Forth Inc. is kicked out. Elizabeth Rather routinely makes the whole Forth community look foolish with her lying. She has made a career out of borrowing other people's fame. Primarily, as described above, she has borrowed Charles Moore's fame for inventing Forth, although there is no evidence that she made any contribution at the time, or that she has ever written a Forth program in her life. There is also the NASA saga --- for quite a long time, Elizabeth Rather and Leon Wagner made a sales pitch for SwiftForth claiming that NASA was their customer. This was all just a big lie; NASA was never their customer. They just hoped that potential customers would think, "Gee, if SwiftForth is good enough for NASA, then I should spend my $400+ on it too!" --- by the time that the sucker finds out that NASA doesn't actually use any Forth Inc. product, and that SwiftForth is useless for commercial work, it is too late to get a refund.

In this thread (https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/comp.lang.forth/1y4khh5VZBc%5B1-25-false%5D) we have Elizabeth Rather borrowing fame from the Marine Corp (?!):

I really want to have a new Forth standard that is incompatible with ANS-Forth. I would call this Lambda Forth, because the primary feature would be quotations (not Payson-faked quotations that are just syntactic sugar for :NONAME, but real quotations that have access to the creator function's local variables). Elizabeth Rather and her cult can continue to support ANS-Forth and can continue to pretend to be the Marine Corp --- the more serious members of the Forth community can support the new standard.

Yes, you seldom know anything about the world that isn't right in front
of you. It would please me greatly if you added me to you killfile list
and never read another of my posts... I would especially appreciate it
if you never replied to any of my posts again. I doubt I will ever be
addressing you since I realize that is pointless. In fact, I'm not sure
why I am writing this since I am sure it will have any effect except for
the intended one.

This is what Elizabeth Rather said on the Forth-200x mailing list:

Hugh has been hanging around c.l.f for several years, now. He originally got mad at FORTH, Inc. because we insisted on charging for an upgrade to SwiftForth 3.0 for people who had bought 2.x > a year earlier. He has had one programming job, paying $10/hr, on which he wrote a cross-compiler for a microcontroller for a project. He was fired at the end of the project, and has since been working as a taxicab driver. He is actively homophobic, and developed his hatred for me when I called him on a particularly vitriolic attack on a c.l.f poster who dared to mention his partner. Hope you are doing well. Ned and i are enjoying life in Hawaii, and hope you are, too!

Aloha,
Elizabeth

I said this:

Elizabeth says:
[Hugh] has
had one programming job, paying $10/hr, on which he wrote a
cross-compiler for a microcontroller for a project. He was fired at the end of the project, and has since been working as a taxicab driver.

You're lying. For one thing, I have worked at several programming jobs. You know this, because I have mentioned the C/C++ and the IBM370 assembly-language jobs on comp.lang.forth. Also, I wasn't fired from Testra after writing MFX (the cross-compiler for the MIniForth). I did another large project for them later on. After that I quit because I wasn't getting a raise and because I wasn't getting health benefits even though the other employee was --- basically, because it was a dead-end job. I've worked as a machinist since then --- cab-driving is just something that I do when I'm unemployed --- right now I working in construction.

How would you know anything about Testra business decisions? They don't like you either, and aren't talking to you. One time I asked John Hart why he was using UR/Forth rather than SwiftForth, and he said that he can't stand you personally, but he got along with Ray Duncan okay. I didn't know you at the time. This was fine with me though, as I had disassembled the heck out of UR/Forth on my own time prior to getting hired, and so I already had a leg up on the job. After I left Testra I bought a copy of SwiftForth on my own, and I found that it was slow, buggy and generally no good (I've seen shareware Forths that were better) --- I wouldn't have been able to write MFX using SwiftForth, although I had succeeded with UR/Forth.

When I worked at Testra I was told that you had previously given them a sales pitch for Forth Inc. to write the cross-compiler. You wanted an "exorbitant" amount of money though, and you obviously didn't know anything about the subject on a technical level, which is why I got hired instead. I think that you hate me because I stole the job from you. There are only a tiny handful of companies in the world who are building a Forth-engine and are willing to pay for its development (because it is going to be used in a commercial product, rather than just be a hobbyist toy). You felt that Forth Inc. deserved the job, and that I stole it from you.

him on a particularly vitriolic attack on a c.l.f poster who dared to

Here is the comp.lang.forth thread that she is referring to in which she put me on her kill list in support of Passaniti:

You'll note that she doesn't say that he is a "failure as a Forth
programmer." When slighted, Hugh displays enormous interpretive
flexibility. I can only assume that he is always too exhausted from
such feats of interpretation to put time into understanding anything
else, such as the 100th iteration of "No Hugh, you're wrong about dead
horse #56 and this is why."

This is the thread you are referring to:
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/comp.lang.forth/qqlp1gZnVic

This thread was notable because Albert van der Horst repeatedly (3 times) posted non-working code that he claimed was my LC53 prng, but which he had just made up. He did this to "prove" that my code didn't work. Eventually he stopped posting fake code and examined the code that I had actually written, and grudgingly admitted that it did work. He said that I had "got lucky" in choosing constants that provided a maximal period.

Shortly after that, in another thread, Julien Fondren began posting non-working code snippets that he claimed were from my novice package, but which he had just made up. I think he got the idea of doing this from Albert.

This is the thread:
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/comp.lang.forth/gUJ_0U2LkLU%5B1-25-false%5D

This is my post on that same thread in the Forth-200x mailing list that eventually got me kicked off:

As mentioned before, this subject has already been discussed on comp.lang.forth:
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/comp.lang.forth/OSGAn7bsDU0

Here is a snippet from that:

It should be obvious from this, as well as many many other Elizabeth Rather posts, that she either does not understand the concept of general-purpose code, or is actively trying to prevent general-purpose code from being written. She repeatedly says that data-structures such as arrays and linked lists have to be written from scratch every time "to solve the problem at hand."

What this means in practice, is that new programs are written by cut-and-pasting the source-code from old programs. For example, if an old program had an LLRB tree, then a new program that needed an LLRB tree would just get the source-code from the old program pasted into it, with the innards modified to make it work for the new data. The LLRB tree is just a humorous example, as Forth Inc. obviously doesn't use such complicated data structures --- but cut-and-paste is apparently their standard technique with arrays and linked-lists and other simple data-structures that they are capable of working with.

FODs (Foul Old Dudes) like cut-and-paste programming. They gain an advantage over the FNGs (F'ing New Guys) because they have a list of all the old programs in the archive. When a new program is needed, they can generally remember an old program that was similar, and they can cut-and-paste from that old program. By comparison, the FNG doesn't have access to the archive (or, at least, doesn't know what is in the archive because there is no available documentation), and hence has to write everything from scratch. The FOD can whip out a binary tree or whatever quite quickly, while the FNG is bogged down implementing it from scratch (often with an algorithms book open on his desk). If the FNG tries to make his code reusable, and start putting together a library, then the FODs run to the boss and complain that the FNG is spending time doing something other than writing the application program that was assigned to him, and hence deserves to be fired for wasting company time. It is all just a big scam by the FODs to stay on top and hold down the FNGs ("Old age and treachery defeat youth and skill."). This scam only works when the language does not support reusable code very well. In my experience as a machinist, this scam is standard in CNC gcode which has almost no support for reusability. I've never worked as a COBOL or Fortran programmer, but I've heard that this scam is pretty typical there too, because those languages have terrible support for reusability. I think that it is not a coincidence that Elizabeth Rather's background prior to Forth was in COBOL and Fortran --- she is trying to make Forth a haven for FODs just like COBOL and Fortran are havens for FODs (actually, were havens for FODs, because both languages have become obsolete due to the dearth of FNG volunteers). This is why Forth lacks libraries, and the lack of libraries is why Forth has a dearth of FNG volunteers --- all we have left are FODs, and there is no future in that.

Anton Ertl: You have told me many times that you are in charge of Forth-200x. The time has come for you to kick somebody off this mailing list for gross technical incompetence. You have somebody here who is not a programmer at all, and knows essentially nothing about programming, and is dragging Forth-200x down. You know who it is! Grow a spine --- kick that person off the list!

Cheers --- Hugh

Actually, nobody really knows what Charles Moore thinks because he is incommunicado, and has been for decades. The quotes from Moore in "Thinking Forth" were likely cherry-picked by Elizabeth Rather to support her own simplistic concept of programming. It is possible that he understands the concept of general-purpose programming but never got around to teaching Elizabeth Rather or anybody else at Forth Inc. prior to getting kicked out. On the other hand, maybe he doesn't understand general-purpose programming and Elizabeth Rather is accurately describing his philosophy. The only way to find out, would be to ask him, but that is impossible.

Elizabeth Rather has made a career out of telling everybody that she is the world's second Forth programmer, and implying that because Charles Moore is incommunicado, she knows everything there is to know about Forth. This reminds me of how cults form around somebody who is supposedly "channeling" some ancient wise person, or some wise alien who wants to help humanity, or whoever --- the cult leaders doing the "channeling" are trying to borrow somebody else's authority because they have no authority themselves. They are just making this stuff up --- Elizabeth Rather makes stuff up all the time and pretends that it came from Charles Moore and that we should all accept it as the gospel --- she gets away with this because Charles Moore is ignoring her and has been for decades.

Charles Moore has moved on to designing hardware, such as the GA144. All of his designs are far out and funky --- I am not interested --- and I am not aware of anybody who is interested. When I worked at Testra I asked if they had any interest in Charles Moore's hardware --- I was wondering why Testra was building their own Forth engine (the MiniForth that I wrote MFX for) rather than use the master's. I was told that Moore's design (he had that 25-bit processor with the 5-bit opcodes at the time) was just too weird to be practical. Also, it is a single-source processor, so it might disappear. Testra was focused on doing commercial work (motion-control boards, such as for the laser etcher) and they had to be practical. The MiniForth was built on a Lattice 1048isp PLD, which was quite common in those days, but the MiniForth could be upgraded to other hardware if necessary (and I think they did upgrade it after I left). I have never heard of Charles Moore doing any commercial work for anything practical like motion-control. My own interest is mostly toward practical stuff like CAM and micro-controllers --- I don't have any interest in Charles Moore, and I suspect that he has no interest in me either. Jeff Fox said he could introduce me to Charles Moore, but I said I wasn't interested as it is not my habit to pursue celebrities, and I didn't think we would have anything in common to talk about anyway.

Cool. I'm working on an RPGMaker-style map editor on Android right
now, as a development tool.

I'm not familiar with BOOST, but CPAN's advantages (to the Perl
community) have been posted to clf at some length.

> Is there an equivalent for Forth? (i.e. a set of public domain libraries that one can download and use)

There isn't. There's certainly some interest. There's FLAG. People
are capable of getting things posted to forth.org. There is
forth.sf.net, and several wikis, and there are large bodies of code
like the Forth Foundation Library and the Forth Scientific Library.

If you'd like to start one, I'd recommend that you limit your work to
actively curating a list of github or other repository links, and
accepting blurbs about them that you can manually post to a
[commentless] blog accompanying the links. You can work on providing
a library that auto-installs libraries from these links, and other
infrastructure, and foisting the curation onto some volunteer after
you have the hosting and have gotten the ball rolling, later.

You probably don't want to spend hours and hours just blocking and
banning spammers, like you would with a wiki or any service allowing
people to sign up and immediately post content. A simple resource
like the above will work just fine on cheap shared webhosting, not
take much of your time, and do most of you want. It's basically just
a 'portal' to a 'web ring', without the animated gif or intersite
links.

Just some thoughts.

The ForthFreak wiki was pretty good and didn't seem to have too many
spam problems, but it eventually stopped accepting updates due to some
planned software migration that was in limbo last time I looked.

Yes. I took a look at the code on FLAG and at the FFL and found that the latter has code that I can understand and use. My limited time means I have not had opportunity to look at other libraries yet.

FWIW I am not knowledgeable enough to take on this type of task. I expect it would mean a group of like minded individuals finding a way of working together, which is never easy. I expect that the size of the C++ community would make the chances of finding the right people, who are able to donate their time to support Boost, rather easier.

Most valuable - thank you.
