#36111 — Forth for MIPS 24K computer

SubjectForth for MIPS 24K computer
Message-ID<m2a912f2gb.fsf@gmail.com>
Hello all!

I'm just wondering, what the Forth can be used on this computer with MIPS
24K processor:
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1133560316/black-swift-tiny-wireless-computer

It looks like Gforth is the only possible candidate?

If this thing has been designed for Linux, then probably you'll be able to
use open-sourced Forths, like Gforth, pForth, kForth - and it's very likely,
that Hans Bezemer maybe does another port of his 4th, if there's interest.

croaking noise and said, for the last time: "SEVEN".

Yes, you are right. Somehow I've forgot about other OS C-based Forths.

Ah, you wanted "standalone" Forth(OS) for the device? Only FlashForth comes
to mind at the moment - but surely it would require modifications.

Looks interesting!
These people have great ideas, even to easily fit Black Swift inside my old printer making it WiFi-compatible, or using it for metering.

I only don't understand why Linux is needed to run this board. It doesn't have a video or keyboard interface. It's an embedded system, called 'Black Swift' - so it should be run with 'Swift Forth' on it.

Would be great to have a Forth computer that size!

Dirk.

Cute. You could also use SwiftX without the Linux.

Why are they talking NZ$ when they're apparently a Russian group?

Cheers,
Elizabeth

Russian team formed among migrants to NZ? Or maybe the payment to Hong-Kong
manufacturer must be done (for whatever reason) in NZD?

As far as I understand, Linux is needed to provide the device drivers
and convenient environment for programs to develop and to run.

> Would be great to have a Forth computer that size!

Perhpas this board can be a good start point to write Forth OS? You need
only write some drivers and Forth for MIPS. :)

Sounds interesting but I would prefer a 64 bit environment. 32 bit is a little bit outdated.

Indeed. Suppose you have already a linux based Forth in assembler as
a starting point. All the i/o calls ( FILE wordset, KEY TYPE EMIT
ACCEPT) are the same on MIPS, so you can concentrate on translating
words like + and 0<. In fact Frans van de Markt is developping
an ARM -forth on the beagleboard based on ciforth (assembler)
right now.

That is a lot more work. Think of writing the USB drivers yourself.

I'm not familiar with the MIPS-24K --- how does that compare to the PIC32?

Well I'm familiar with neither MIPS-24K nor PIC32.

The chipset is used on this board is Qualcomm Atheros AR9331. It is the
MIPS32 24K core. PIC32 seems to have MIPS32 4K core. It's rather
difficult for me to say how 24K and 4K differ, but at least 24K has a
floating point module.

The documentation for board is on their site http://black-swift.com
The documentation for Qualcomm Atheros AR9331 chipset should be
available from its manufacturer, I suppose.

Here is the datashit for the chipset:
