I nearly immediately ordered this book (only 2 left, it says), but then I discovered that this is only about programming in Parallax' proprietary SPIN programming language. At http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parallax_Propeller#FORTH_on_the_Propeller it says there are six different Forth versions available. My intention was to ask for a leaflet about this Parallax-Forth project with display, keyboard, and external memory interface.

I don't think that would physically damage the PC though--just the software and files. You'd boot from a floppy, reformat the hard drive > and restore from backup (you did have backups didn't you), and be back > to where you were. Overwriting partition table on some computers can render the computer *permanently* unuseable. E.g., certain computers had a private partition with software which worked together with the BIOS. If that partition was wiped, the machine wouldn't boot. The software to restore or recreate such partitions isn't available. I don't recall at the moment if these were Hewlett-Packards or Compaqs, but I think it was HP ... About the only other way to harm an IBM compatible PC's hardware via software was to set the wrong video mode for the monitor and blow a fuse. Of course, that was only with early monitors. Overwriting to the partition tables can be a problem if you didn't back them up. For some filesystems, they can be recreated, but not for others. The worst one though is registry corruption on Windows. Without backups of the registry, the only way to restore the missing info is to re-install *everything*. Unfortunately, Windows comes pre-installed on most computers along with a whole bunch of software. You may find that you have the OS re-install disks, but find the computer manufacturer failed to provide a license key. They typically fail to provide the re-install disks for the custom hardware drivers, and other pre-installed software too. Rod Pemberton

It may or may not physically damage the PC, but it wasn't worth the risk to me to find out. Besides, the formula you give for restoring a scrambled PC, with which formula I'm all too familiar, is something I've tried assiduously to avoid. My one five-minute foray into Forth on a PC many moons ago was enough to convince me it wasn't the platform & language combo for me. Forth on a VIC-20 might have been fantastic, though. Still, *everything* is better now. ARM Cortex M chips and Forth are a match made in heaven.

I do get the idea that Forth worked well on the C64 and PET, but the VIC-20 was a little too small, unless perhaps you put the program code into a ROM cartridge. As I understand it, the C64 had 64k of ram, the PET typically had 16K, but the VIC had just 2.5k. There were some very fancy Forth systems (MS-DOS applications like F-PC) for traditional PC's and I don't think of them as more dangerous than running C code on those PC's.

I no longer recall which Forth I tried using on a PC (but since I was a student at the time it probably wasn't very fancy). Nor do I remember the specifics of the various warnings other users gave me. But I do recall rather clearly that the very first thing I tried to do with it caused the machine to lock up and the screen to go absolutely bonkers. I needed that PC for a lot of other things and was not at all comfortable with the risk. YMMV. There are lots of Forths, lots of Forthers, and lots of PCs.

Yes, that happened all the time with C programs too. It was still fairly unlikely to mess up the disk that way. Your program would write to a stray pointer and crash soon after. You'd reboot the box and get back to debugging. Disk access was normally by OS calls rather than raw hardware operations. Windows systems would slowly degrade (e.g. by registry keys getting messed up) rather than getting suddenly trashed, and eventually you'd have to reinstall everything. There were and are programs that backed up your stuff by imaging the hard drive, so you wouldn't have to reinstall applications one by one.

Forth was OK on the PET and C64, kinda-sorta, but the 6502 made life very difficult if you wanted to do multi-tasking because the stack always lived in Page 1. Sure, you could handle the return stack in software rather than using push and pull insns, but that really sucked. I vaguely remember there was a later version of the 6502 which allowed you to use any page for the stack, but by then no-one cared. Andrew.

Well the ARM architecture is not very Forth friendly. The best was the Zilog Super 8 - tops in Forth friendliness. The 68000 was good too. The '86 family is no too bad. Especially these days.

Let me add that Forth turned out really well on the '1114 due to Clyde's valiant efforts. And I do not exaggerate when I say VALIANT. There were some very dark days in the development process.

By far not as powerful as ARM, but much more than sufficient for designing I2C Devices, I think, and running on µAmps.

I have no idea what Clyde and others have had to go through to make it all work so well. One of these days I'm going to make a Forth engine on an FPGA - like the J1 but executed on an Altera Cyclone V device. The conversion from machine primitives to Forth are represented as 'trivial.'

The conversion from machine primitives to Forth are represented as 'trivial.' I have not used the J1, but I have looked at it in detail and liked what I saw. It is a very compact design with few frills, but enough to get the job done. If you need a CPU on an FPGA I recommend the J1. If you wish to play with rolling your own CPU on an FPGA that's fine too. But if you are designing your own CPU for a project I would say it is likely a waste of time. There are a lot of CPU designs for FPGAs and quite a number are Forth like. At this point rolling your own is a lot like writing your own forth... why reinvent the wheel? I know because I have been there. I would be happy to share my design, but it has never been adequately documented for anyone's use but my own. -- Rick

We've been dealing with such architectures since the 1970s and probably before. ARM and Cortex are no worse and much better than many others. It was in a solderable TSSOP package. It had enough resources to do a Forth. It was the only chip that met that set of criteria. I had originally planned to write the Forth myself but when Clyde came on the scene we decided that a division of labor was in order. I do hardware and application code Clyde does Forth and ports it to various machines. And I must say that I am EXTREMELY happy with the Forth Clyde has produced. I think I should mention that Clyde and I go back a LONG ways. We were working together with the various Forths available since about '76 with our acquaintance starting with Chicago CACHE Club in '75. He did a cut down fig for a Z-80 board I was making in '78.
