Can Gforth on the Android be used to make turnkey apps? Can it
interface with the Android GUI?

Thanks, Steve

Yes, sort-of. At the moment, we can't compile C bindings into an image, so
you have to load the Android-specific stuff from source (this is on my to-do
list). And the cross compilation build procedure which produces the apk
still contains too much magic for the average developer ;-).

> Can it interface with the Android GUI?

I have a JNI interface, but using that to interface the Android GUI wouldn't
be a very pleasent job. The Android GUI is tossing Java stuff all over the
place, and you really don't want to program this in another language. It's
not designed for language neutral bindings, not even for JNI interfacing, as
you need to subclass Java classes to get what you want. Maybe some easy
things work well from Forth via JNI (plus XML for the GUI description), but
in general, this is all too much in Java land.

I'm working on MINOS2, which will be a Forth GUI library similar to MINOS,
but with modern look and feel (animation, shaded stuff and such).

Thanks. Are there any examples of using it to code simple projects?

MINOS2 sounds interesting...

As an alternative, it might be possible to interface gforth to the SL4A environment. I don't know how compatible Apache and GNU licensing is but I suspect that supporting this option might not be within the gforth team's remit.

The process seems to require using a remote procedure call over a network socket connection to the SL4A server to send and receive JSON objects. One option for handling JSON is to create a Forth/C binding to the JANSSON library. Another is to await the next FFL release which promised (in 2011) JSON capabilities.

See: https://code.google.com/p/android-scripting/
and: http://www.digip.org/jansson/
and: https://code.google.com/p/ffl/

How is the command line set up ... when I try to run it on my Nook HD, I get a black screen. I have a sneaking suspicion it might be a "black text on black screen" kind of situation.

Is that is something that is set in a start-up file to make it possible to experiment with different settings and see is something shows up?

Highly unlikely. You can actually set text and background colors, but if it
was black/black by default, others would see the same problem. So the
better guess is that you have some unique conditions that don't show up on
other devices. Don't worry, usually I find out what it is.

Two things for troublshooting: in /sdcard, you find a gforthout.log and a
gfortherr.log. In /sdcard/gforth/site-forth, there's a starta.fs, which is
read in at startup. This reads a few android-specific files, especially the
GL terminal, but also the remote telnet terminal.

If you don't see a crash in gfortherr.log, you can try adding a single

t

at the end of starta.fs, then start Gforth and telnet to Port 4444 - if you
get Gforth there, then you have an OpenGL problem.

The gfortherr.log says:

Ok, that looks fine. Next, add a "t" at the last line of
/sdcard/gforth/site-forth/starta.fs and try telnet <your tablet's ip> 4444.
Then you can e.g "include gl-sample.fs" and see if a simpler GL shader
program works on your device.

I don't know if I've ever had telnet on my netbook upstairs, but googling to find out how to find my Nook's IP address turned up the answer in no time, so I'll give it a try tomorrow.
