He was responsible for a great deal of quotable material, but this one is by Robert Heinlein from his novel Time Enough for Love. The first publication date was January 1973. Aphorisms from two chapters of the book, including this quote, were published seperately in 1978 as The Notebooks of Lazarus Long. I doubt either the book or the extracts would have been considered suitable reading for impressionable 11 to 13 year olds of a US middle high school sometime in 1977-79 when you claim to have seen it; for one, the novel has the protagonist Lazarus Long travelling back in time to be seduced by his mother. Perhaps it was some other quote.

You don't need to postpone OF and ENDOF and it is essential to
initialise (default)
variable (default) false (default) !
: default: postpone drop true (default) ! ; immediate
: endcase (default) @ if 42 postpone literal then
postpone endcase false (default) !
; immediate
However, if you want to make this (and your code) bullet-proof, there
are two points to note (but you'll probably decide to live with these
restrictions):
1. If compilation fails in the default code, (default) is left in the
incorrect state so you really need to redefine CASE e.g.
: case postpone case false (default) ! ; immediate
2. If another case statement is used in the default code then the
variable gets overwritten and the above code won't work (a workaround is
to factor the nested case into another colon definition but that's
beside the point).
e.g. try (in GForth) with the above code
: test2 ( n1 n2 -- n3 )
case 1 of drop 100 endof
2 of drop 200 endof
default: case -1 of -100 endof
-2 of -200 endof
default: 999
endcase
endcase
.
;
-1 1 test2 100 ok
-1 2 test2 200 ok
-1 3 test2 0
:20: Stack underflow
-1 3 >>>test2<<<
Backtrace:
$7FBA2BDC throw
Instead of using a variable a stack should be used. I can solve this in
my system which has a separate control-flow stack but I can't see a
solution in GForth using the data stack because of the control-flow data
it leaves there when compiling.
All in all too much trouble for me. I'll live with with the original
case statement.

Good points Gerry. You're quite right. CASE needs to be modified also. Regarding nested cases, I would go with a separate definition anyway. A matter of different styles, I guess. Thanks

Obviously, my system is not ready for public release. But, I'm not sure how I ended up being mentioned in this thread. Did you mean Mark? Andrew? I'm reading this thread since I hoped someone might come up with a simpler way to implement Eakers case. I have looked at Eaker's case. A few of the words were simple, made sense, and could be easily defined in terms of existing Forth words. However, one was overly complicated. IIRC - I haven't looked at his case in a few years - the complicated word is the one that recursively links the branches together. Rod Pemberton

I'd say the code to implement it is very clever and non-intuitive. But there's actually very little code. The code to recursively do the branching is genius (and not actually recursive - it just loops until it sees a 0 on the stack (put there by case)). Have a look at my implementation here: http://turboforth.net/source/Bank0/0-05-FlowControl.html It uses if and then to do most of the work on our behalf. I don't claim credit for the code. I got it from somewhere. Can't remember where, unfortunately. Mark

Or you could steal a high level, inefficient, portable implementation from e.g. ciforth and get it over with. (I cannot use CASE without looking it up. Final final version of the "improved" (YMMV et al) CASE with ability to specify a defualt behaviour in a nice/nicer way.
variable (default)
: case ( -- )
false (default) !
[compile] case
; immediate
: default: ( -- )
compile dup
[compile] of
true (default) !
; immediate
: endcase ( -- )
(default) @ if
[compile] endof
then
[compile] endcase
false (default) !
; immediate
* CASE now initialises (default) note: doesn't support nested CASEs
* ENDCASE improved - the ELSE leg in previously posted version wasn't necessary.
I'm not sure of the stack sigs for the words.

Just put the previous value of (default) on the stack at the start of CASE
and restore it from there at the end of ENDCASE. Then this thing works even
whe you do something like
: foo ( -- )
BEGIN key
case '1' of ... endof
'2' of ... endof
default: key case #esc of ." done" EXIT endof
#cr of ." next round" endof
default: ...
endcase
endcase ;
