#19047 — Computer Disasters on Parade

Dear Forthers,

This is off topic, but I thought that I'd post a message about this.  I did not find a ready made blog or website detailing numerous computer disasters and mistakes.  Why not?  Also, could there not be a message board out there dedicated to people complaining and griping about computers.

For example, here is my latest gripe.  LinkedIn ( now called StinkedIn ) allows anybody to claim a skill in anything, and consequentially, for anybody to endorse anybody for any skill whatsoever.  So, if I claim that I can build microscopic fusion reactors in my basement out of buckyballs, then somebody else can endorse me for that.  Yet another Social Media goof up.

While it may be in my perception of Forth culture acceptable to critique the computer industry, and to see it's flaws, I don't think that flooding this message board with complaints would contribute to the focus of the group much.  That being said, I wonder if there is any interest in a Computer Disasters Blog of some sort?

You didn't look too thoroughly through the list of newsgroups then.

...and you would be right in that presumption. There is, however, an 
excellent newsgroup for such information (which I read). If you are 
seriously into computer disasters, then you will, I am sure, find it.

One problem with LinkedIn is that someone can recommend an
individual, but they can't recommend rejecting an individual.
There is a "thumbs up" button, but no "thumbs down".  E.g., most
managers I've worked for in my lifetime are average: average
intellect, average people skills, average work ethic, average
looks, ...  Even so, I've had three very good managers whom I'd
like to promote, if they ever happen to join LinkedIn.  However,
I've had three absolutely bad managers too.  I can't let anyone
know how horrible those people were on LinkedIn.  I can't report
their alcoholism, their incompetence, their verbal abuse, etc.
There is no way to effectively report the people with bad
behaviors.  This is especially needed for managers.  One of those
bad managers happened to have many manager level friends who
recommend him.  So, it looks like he is a superb candidate to his
future employer.  Of course, that's not the case.  Those "bad
apples" will just be hired somewhere else and many others will
suffer.

So, yes, I agree that the inability to report lousy, former
co-workers as being truly horrid is a serious imbalance and
misrepresents reality for those using LinkedIn to find employees.
I'd say the positive and negative impressions of former co-workers
is far more important than lies, lying by omission, and
misrepresentation of the facts on peoples resumes.  Of course, if
a "thumbs up" or "thumbs down" can't be reported anonymously,
then it's of no use.  No one will report the bad.
