I don't in any way doubt that one _can_ find compiler errors etc. ... but the
'Venn diagram' of possibilities slews heavily towards that not being the case,
usually.
I lead a small team of 8 or so SW Embedded SW developers, and I've worked with
a few people I'd call SW geniuses. There's no way I'd want someone with
Hugh's attitude on my team, it indicates one or more of (a) lack of wisdom,
(b) unwarranted arrogance, (c) comic lack of self-awareness.

As usual, you extrapolate wildly and without much foundation. I wasn't meaning
people on my team when I referred to SW geniuses, for starters.
You would benefit from widening your experience ... of team work, for starters.
It's very clear you don't know what team work is like. But don't let one or two
bad experiences colour your judgement so much.

When I tried to find out more about current FORTH systems, I came to the following (strictly personal) conclusions: 1) I distinguish between old-style (threaded) code, for interactive program development, and new-style (native compiled) code, aiming at performant programs as an alternative to other programming languages. 2) FORTH code is almost write-only, the readability depends heavily on explicit documentation. This is acceptable with small applications, or with libraries coming with a small and well documented interface (API). The same applies to LISP and other functional languages, for which I never had any serious application cases. Taking both together I may give FORTH another try, as a development environment resident on my medium sized microcontrollers, using kind of threaded code as used with my 8 bit microprocessors, decades ago. WRT native code I'll try to implement a C compatible Pascal front-end to gcc, because I used Delphi in the last decades and learned to love that language (OPL), before I start to dig into compiled FORTH (if ever). WRT this group I think that it is dedicated to compiled FORTH and its (ongoing?) evolution, and it looks like a bad idea to mix features of both[1] branches. I can't see why it should be wrong to follow one or other branch or standard, but this basic choice should be made clear with every single discussion, just to prevent flame and language wars. Common Lisp is pretty retro these days, but tons of stuff is being done in Haskell, ML/Ocaml, Clojure, Scala, Erlang, etc. > WRT native code I'll try to implement a C compatible Pascal front-end > to gcc There might be one around already. There is certainly Ada, which is a descendant of Pascal. > WRT this group I think that it is dedicated to compiled FORTH and its > (ongoing?) evolution, and it looks like a bad idea to mix features of > both[1] branches. The compiled Forths have to take special measures to act the same as interpreted ones, but they do that. Elizabeth mentioned a while back that native code became important on 32-bit systems because threaded code took more space: a whole 32-bit cell for each word of any definition, when there are rarely more than a few thousand definitions. 32 bits of native code can do more than a simple DUP token. In the 16-bit era threading wasn't so bad, but 32-bit wastes a lot of space and 64-bit even more. On the other hand there are fewer memory constraints now.

The gcc terminology is quite sloppy here, considering the whole compiler (including code generation) as a front-end, and I don't want to invent my own optimization and code generation for all the controllers supported by avr-gcc. I'm not sure yet about the output of a gcc front-end. Some docs say that it's assembly code, this would be the worst case. It also might be GIMPLE, what doesn't help me much because I also don't know yet how to create output for GIMPLE. ATM I need a good C/C++ development environment for exploring an existing compiler, then I'll know better where to start. > I believe GNAT (gcc-based Ada system) can generate code for the avr > though I don't know how complete the runtime library is. The avr-gcc comes with C, C++, Java, FORTRAN, ADA and a couple of other language front-ends. I don't know how these are related to the standard gcc, and what processors are supported by the standard gcc. The libraries are another reason why I want binary compatibility, so that my Pascal can use the C++ classes provided by the avr libraries. DoDi

These ommissions indicate what I mean with bloat. Many features of Algol68 were never needed or really used, maybe because of their poor performance (at that time) or compiler bugs. I admit that it's not a strong argument, that I used only a fraction of the features in my own programs, but that indicates at least a lack of use cases for all the features. The successors (AlgolW, Pascal...) were more practical, WRT both the compiler implementors and the users. DoDi

Having worked with threaded code Forth for 20 years and native compiled code for 15 (before I retired) I have to say that the only difference in programming methodology or interactivity is that the old-style systems kept source in blocks and the modern ones in files. There are some technical constraints, such as in the recent discussion we've been having about manipulating program flow by doing things to the Return Stack -- but even that is transparent on some compiled code systems. And you're always quite free to use implementation-dependent strategies so long as you're prepared to accept the resulting dependence. And the native compiled code is really significantly faster. > 2) FORTH code is almost write-only, the readability depends heavily on > explicit documentation. The readability of Forth code is primarily dependent on two factors: the reader's experience with Forth, and the discipline of the programmer. At FORTH, Inc. we worked in teams of programmers who agreed on certain stylistic conventions, and followed them. As a result, we could read each other's code quite easily, and our customers found our code quite readable, as well. Of course, we used internal documentation a lot, too. > Taking both together I may give FORTH another try, as a development > environment resident on my medium sized microcontrollers, using kind of > threaded code as used with my 8 bit microprocessors, decades ago. Well, the standards have studiously avoided dependence or expectation of any implementation strategy, since 1994, and focus entirely on semantics (what words do). Free Pascal also is aimed at Delphi (GPU) compatibility, not at microcontrollers with interrupts, Harvard architecture and other stuff. It also doesn't support gcc libraries.
