We're excited to announce we've got a partner who is designing and developing an "embedded-8th" board! Details on our forum: http://8th-dev.com/forum/index.php/topic,923.0.html

Or even a raspberry pi or the like. Is there an architectural description of 8th somewhere? I.e. what kind of storage management does it use?

We wanted a powerful microcontroller with crypto support, and the other boards are either too expensive, too weak, too many features, etc. > Is there an architectural description of 8th somewhere? There will be SD card support among other things.

I guess the gpio's etc. are available through /dev/* interfaces. > We wanted a powerful microcontroller with crypto support, and the > other boards are either too expensive, too weak, too many features, > etc. How much will you be able to sell your board for? ST Discovery M4 boards are $20 or under at Digikey, with 168 mhz, 1MB flash, 192k ram, various i/o's etc. There's a $50 M7 board with a touchscreen and SD slot. Did you look at those? Of course it will be great if you can come anywhere near that. I don't know if they have hardware crypto but software should be fine for most purposes. >> I.e. what kind of storage management does it use? > Current versions of 8th are hosted, so they all use the OS facilities. I was wondering particularly about memory management, which isn't an OS facility. I understand about other stuff like files and i/o.

Ah, well the items are allocated from (preallocated) pools. Each item (number, string etc) is reference-counted and released back to the pool for re-use when its refcount become 0. That happens when nobody is holding onto the item any longer. Strings, arrays and some other items can grow dynamically as required. Some memory allocation goes on behind the scenes for all that to work. Allocated memory is reclaimed when the item is released.
