In a terminal emulator that connects with a single board computer I find (on linux) that if I fetch a KEY then immediately with KEY? ask whether there is another one, I can fetch compound keys just fine. (E.g. F5 show the stack of the sbc). In the following handle-key is called when KEY gets the code 1B <escape> . It then put all immediately following keys in a buffer and executes the command that belongs to it: CREATE key-buffer 20 ALLOT : handle-key 0 key-buffer ! 20 0 DO key-buffer $C+ KEY? IF KEY ELSE LEAVE THEN LOOP key-buffer $@ FOUND DUP IF EXECUTE ELSE DROP newkey THEN ; I never happened even once that [A or some such appears on the screen. Such a usage of KEY? may work better in an editor than trying to use an EKEY that is based on calling c-function in the X-windows. It could even be used to build a passable EKEY on top of KEY. Experimenting I see that with this xterminal on gnome, there is a different sequence depending on the shift keys pressed, e.g. shift alt cursor up is different from alt cursor up, but shift control up scrolls the windows content. So it goes a long way to handling modificating keys too, enough for a lot of commands. After you've made an editor that works portably between Gforth and lina on Gnome, you may detect that it totally breaks down on KDE. Just keep blaming Forth's EKEY :-). > >And indeed, looking at Gforth, SwiftForth, VFX Forth, and bigForth for >Linux, when I do > >key . key . key . key . > >and then press Cursor-up and then x, all of them output > >27 91 65 120 So does lina, it is hard to think of a reasonable linux Forth that behaves differently. > >I also tried SP-Forth 4.20 for Linux, but its KEY just returns 0 >without waiting for a keypress; and EKEY just gives an error.
