Anybody wanting to find out about Forth from start is going to see the the Wikipedia article. This is the rest of the world doing a Google search, rather than the clf community. This confers some importance on on the Wikipedia article. The article is relatively detailed. The Edit history shows that there are guardian angels, with the last revision on Feb 22. Does anyone have any critical comment on the current article? There is I think 1 clf reference to the article in the last month, but I'm having trouble retrieving it. I fell off the Forth train in about 2000, so I'm unsure what to tell friends who ask me about the article. jim betts

Who are the guardian angels? Anyone here? My experience with Wikipedia has not been good. In my experience the subjects in which I had knowledge and experience were 'guarded' by what can only be described as zealots who think they know better than everyone else.

For the most part, Wikipedia is used by high-school students writing a school report on some subject. They could use that page describing Forth to write a report on Forth and, by making a few modifications so it isn't obviously copied directly out of Wikipedia, be able to fake up great expertise on the subject. Of course, they still don't know anything about the subject --- this doesn't matter though, because the teacher doesn't know anything about the subject either --- most high-school teachers went to college with the intention of becoming an engineer, but after a year or two were told to either switch majors or drop out, and a teaching major seemed pretty undemanding... Wikipedia is not something that I would burn up a lot of emotional energy on --- there are other ways to waste time that don't involve being called stupid on a daily basis --- comp.lang.forth isn't one of them, however.

People who don't know Wikipedia sometimes try to edit articles based on their own knowledge. This doesn't go down well with the zealots. If you have references to known sources, particularly reputable sources such as HOPL II, it should be fine. There are certainly some missing references. Andrew.

I can read: 'so that you can have a program written on one personal computer and run it on another...'. I can write a program in Forth, bring it to another computer and run Forth there with all programs. The only way to prevent it is to send source texts only and try to run it on another Forth translator. In this case we will need compatible translators on both machines. Forget the argument such 'smart people' with me. You don't know how 'smart' I am, and I have no wish to play a kind of contest with anyone. Btw, when SeaForth starts, I've ask Moore's team how they expect to get 1 GHz, listed in overview, because it was too high from my point of view. With no answer except some mocking. SeaForth is running on 560-620 Mhz, right? :)

I think that is the idea, yes. Forth is traditionally only even saved on disk as source, even on old slow blocks systems, since the compiler / outer interpreter is so fast. Also when talking about portable code (you can run this C program on x86 or Arm) that refers to source text.

This definitely must be reviewed. Low memory is not an issue today, but many non-compatible Forth system is an issue. Instead of forcing programmers to do the same thing don't works. It is a fact. I think keeping this will lead to leaving programmers, and this is critical. One may occupy Wikipedia and force a certain standard, but this is a kind of suicide in the long terms.

I've never seen any evidence to indicate that you know anything about Forth or have ever written even a small simple Forth program.

It's just that most Forth compilers are so fast that load-compile-and-run is usually not much slower than just load-and-run, so there hasn't been a performance-driven requirement to store object code. Some implementations can do it anyway, usually for other reasons like turnkey packaging or keeping the source code confidential. > Instead of forcing programmers to do the same thing don't works. It is > a fact. Not sure what you mean: that a standardized version of the language is bad? Obviously Forth implementers are not required to follow the standard: it's just there if they want to use it, and doing so brings some benefits (and some drawbacks). If a particular environment or application can't fit well with ANS, then it's fine to not use ANS. If it can go either way and using ANS isn't too much hassle, then might as well gain some commonality with other systems. > I think keeping this will lead to leaving programmers, and this is > critical. One may occupy Wikipedia and force a certain standard, but > this is a kind of suicide in the long terms. Not sure what you're getting at about Wikipedia. As for programmers leaving Forth, dunno, maybe it's around steady state right now, but Forth's heyday is definitely in the past. It happens, stuff comes and goes, ideas keep being reinvented, etc. The same thing is observed with Lisp. The new stuff isn't exactly better but it was developed around modern-day resources and challenges, so it addresses them more directly. Meanwhile people comfortable with Lisp or Forth keep using it, some eventually drift off. New users also get involved, but not at the same rate as before, given that there are so many more alternatives available now. It's sort of like being into vintage sports cars. It's all fine.

Memory size had nothing whatsoever to do with keeping Forth in source, as the source was kept on disk (well, ok, in 1970-71 one of the Kitt Peak systems used 9-track tape). Until the mid-80's, many Forths had native disk drivers (no OS), which is why blocks were useful (easier to manage than files). With the increasing use of OS-dependent Forths, it was thought convenient to keep source in blocks in OS files, to maintain compatibility with the remaining native Forths. The essential reason for keeping Forth in source was to maintain the intimate relationship between the programmer and the source, to minimize the steps involved in the cycle of typing code and testing it: we hated the conventional long compile-link-load cycle of other languages. Right, but that was only possible because Forth compilers were so fast! If loading and compiling a source block took 1 second, then changing a 60 block program would mean waiting 1 minute before you could run a test. That would have been about the situation with other compilers on hardware of that era. At that point you probably would have wanted object code blocks and a linker etc. There have been some tokenized Forths like Aha and I guess Colorforth to make the compilation cycle even faster. But these days only the largest Forth programs take significant time to compile.
