Terminal emulator.

Just have the emulator run a telnet script as described.

Ok, in that case the terminal emulator is only receiving and not
sending, no big deal. The socket is bidirectional and you're only using
one direction, which is fine. Maybe at some point you might like to
type something on the terminal. You can always add the capability later.

Yeah pretty much.

Ok, I have windows code to do this already and I'd like to get rid of
it. Even if I use the terminal emulator, I still need to figure out how
to open a socket from inside gForth. Just saying "run a telnet script"
doesn't tell me much.

The linux and windows socket api's are pretty similar. I have no idea
what the gforth wrapper looks like.

There might be a hacky way to do this with shell redirection of the
stderr file descriptor. Basically you'd pipe stderr into netcat, and
launch an xterm with a netcat listener ("netcat -l") so that stuff
written to the stderr from your program would then appear in the xterm.

Hmm, linux also has "named pipes" (fifos) where you create a filename
representing the named pipe, write to it from your forth program and
read from it in your terminal window. Getting this to work smoothly can
take some messing around. Maybe this is the easiest approach. On your
application side you'd just open the fifo filename and write to it.
In the terminal you'd just "cat" the fifo.

Or perhaps, at least with version=0.7.9_20140402:

Willem Ouwerkerk has his server for 8051 single board computers.
It has drop down menus, all based on not much more than a few ansi codes
and AT-XY.
I have worked on the MANIP thermal simulation for spacecraft. It had a
windows system that runs within a vt100, and portably at that.

If you're on some unix-like OS, remember infocom. You can look up
escape codes for things like color, scrolling and whatnot.
The character based windows on startup when installing linux in
same mode uses that. You can get pretty far with half a dozen
of those codes. And your program will work with a Hazeltine 1200
if ever one wants to hook that thing up. 1]

There's also the ncurses library - if there's a gforth wrapper for it. That
makes your terminal windows more or less implementation independant and
allows for multiple windows, pop-ups and so on.

I've used curses a lot from C, but not from forth.

That is half the story. The truth behind is that UNIX + C is the only
portable operating system in town. If you don't believe me, fill in
the blanks .... + Ada ...+Forth ...+Haskell ...+algol68

Then we need millions+ customers to gain a critical mass.

I don't get your point. There are a huge number of native Forth
implementations, so if I understand your analogy it would be just Forth
+ Forth. No?

An operatings system for me is a couple of facilities:
word processor, prefereably compatible with MS-WORD
  pc-board design
  Verilog implementation
able to show all formats of you tube films
  shopping in all internet shops
  ....
  do latex typesetting
prints on the usual printers you can buy

So colorforth doesn't fit the bill.

An operating system is none of those. It is the software layer that
sits between each of those and the hardware.

That list is of applications, which have to have been compiled for the
operating system.

I'm sorry, I can't follow what you are trying to say. What is your point?

You may find this site of interest. It includes section on using Forth with
 the Gertboard add on.

Oddly enough this page seems to mostly talk about extending the Atlast
kernal with C code. But it is something to look at.

I don't see that e.g. the Linux/x86 system call interface is that much
more convenient for C than Forth.

It isn't, testified by Forth's like ciforth and jonesforth.

It is just that most facilities nowadays are hidden in .so file,
which has written C in capital letters over it.

VFX Forth for ARM Linux has a serial port driver, a socket layer
and technical support. It works well on both the Raspberry Pi and
the Beaglebone Black.

Great, how does that help me use gForth?

It doesn't, but it may be a cheaper solution overall when your
time is paid for.
