Same place as usual: http://www.forth.org/novice.html That website was down for several months because the guy who maintains it had a stroke, but they seem to have found somebody to maintain it again because it is getting updated again. I keep saying that the novice-package release will be available in a few days, but I add more code and then there is a lot of testing to be done --- every ANS-Forth system has to be tested separately because they are all incompatible with each other --- if you or anybody else wants to help test, I can email a copy.

He's using various wordsets in the package (TOOLS-EXT, FACILITY-EXT, STRING, MEMORY, that's where i stop looking).

Better yet and even less bloated, and, more importantly, resulting in
a standard system (if the system was standard at the start) is leaving
away the STATE-smartness completely. I.e.:
: compile, compile, ;
: cs-pick cs-pick ;
: cs-roll cs-roll ;
Actually, not defining interpretation semantics for these words is
idiotic. My guess is that the Forth-94 authors wanted to require
using these words when there is a current (colon) definition, and used
this unsuitable mechanism to express their intent.
I just tested the following with Gforth, SwiftForth, and VFX, and it
works on all of them:
: foo begin [ 0 cs-pick 1 cs-roll ' + compile, ] until until ;
After defining one of the STATE-smart words above, this no longer
works.

I can change it so these will work inside of [ ] --- this isn't ANS-Forth --- but a lot of "ANS-Forth code" isn't actually ANS-Forth, yet it has to be supported or all the ANS-Forth programmers will say that I'm no good at ANS-Forth programming. I can make the MACRO: words abort if they are used when STATE @ is zero --- of course, this is just the same problem again, in that they will now fail to work inside of [ ] --- it is just moving the problem up one level. A common bug is to use a MACRO: word in interpretive mode and expect it to do what it would do if it were a colon word, but it actually quietly compiles code into the dictionary which is totally unexpected --- maybe I could make the MACRO: words give a warning rather than an error, which should be fine in interpretive mode because the user will see the warning when he executes his line of code and so he will realize that something went wrong.
