Windows uses UTF-16 ("widechars") internally.

The A in MessageBoxA indicates ASCIIZ strings are supported as input,
which are translated to UTF-16 by a call to MultiByteToWideChar. The
translated strings are then handed off to MessageBoxW (not U).

For UTF-8 strings, the programmer is responsible for calling
MultiByteToWideChar before calling MessageBoxW. MessageBoxA only
supports ANSI characters (with some locale shenanigans that is the
result of ancient history predating Windows).

MessageBox is an alias at compile time for either the A or the W form;
which is chosen depends on the character set chosen for the compilation.
There is no entry point called MessageBox in user32.dll.

So the ASCIIZ representation advocated by Ilya Tarasov actually
performs a conversion on every call; if you use c-addr u UTF-8 strings
on the Forth level and have a Forth word MessageBox that performs the
conversion to UTF-16 and then calls MessageBoxW, you will have as few
conversions as when having ASCIIZ strings on the Forth level and
calling MessageBoxA.

It is rare that I need to correct you on a factual item, but this is
not correct. Of course a u*x implementation is free to choose
the way it does system calls, to an extend, so you may be right on
e.g. a Sparc.
However at least OSX, linux 32 bit and Linux 64 bit, return a single
cell. If it is negative it is an error.
This is an example from ciforth:

: WRITE-FILE ROT   ROT   0000,0004 XOS   0   MIN ;

First the (buf, len) and (filedescriptor) are put in correct order.
The system call #4 is done with one result, the number of bytes
or a negative error code. Forth doesn't want the number of bytes,
so `` 0 MIN '' is sufficient to make that a correct call returns 0.

Exactly. E.g. my OPEN-FILE ( string-constant fam - fd ior) starts
with
   >R ZEN R>
ZEN (zero ended) turns a Forth string into a c-string at the last moment.

This principle has been borne out in so many applications. My first job
was calculating the Brent oil fields. Internally oil flow was not
done in Shell's units (kilobarrels/day) but in cubic meters
per second. (Actually m^3/sec was the order of magnitude).

Unix V1-V7 on the PDP-11 sets a carry flag to indicate the error,
and R0 contains either the result or the errno. In September I wrote:

Of course, Chuck originally designed Forth from scratch. He knew several
languages, and knew what he found wrong with them all! His ambition,
though, was not a worldwide movement, but a tool for his personal
productivity. It became a movement when more and more people discovered
that they, too, could be more productive and make better use of their
hardware at the same time.

Of course, in prehistoric age one designed wheel from scratch. Now everyone in the world know what is a wheel and other round things. Why car company must study prehistoric pictures to design a car wheel? Talented engineer can design better wheel, just like a talented programmer cand design better Forth than a programmer who simple repeating he knows Forth for many, many years.

I think there is merit in developing a new system or programming
language from scratch, but it'll most likely have one of two results.
The first outcome is that he'll find that there high degree of
similarity Forth and his results, so it makes sense to comply with Forth
standards. The second outcome is that he'll find that he creates
something very few people will use and it will take a long time for
others to adopt since he doesn't have the power or influence of
Microsoft, Google, or Facebook. But, sometimes they do adopt outside
tools. So, there is hope.

If you look at all the numerous recent "new" and "big" programming and
scripting languages, they're mostly derived from C. But, they all "go
backwards" in that they remove much of C's power, in order to add
enhanced functionality in domain specific areas.

You can go to Rosetta Code or 99 Bottles of Beer websites and see that
C++, Java, Javascript, Objective-C, AWK, C#, Go, Lua, Perl, PHP, Ocaml,
Rust, Swift and numerous others appear to be warmed over C (or perhaps
C++), or at at a minimum, they use curly braces and a C like syntax.
And, if they don't appear to be warmed over C, then they mostly appear
to be warmed over Pascal, Lisp, or BASIC. Then, there are the C and
Pascal looking hybrids, and a few warmed over Forths. HOPL shows the
derivative languages of a specific language, but doesn't have much for
Forth. Esolangs has pages on many (206) other stack languages (go to
the Forth page, select stack based at bottom).

I think that's an illusion. Java and several of the Java-like
languages have, for example, significant metaprogramming and
reflective dynamic programming facilites. This is important: dynamic
and static languages are not the same thing.

I don't mean an absolute new programming language. We are discussing Forth, so it is a question 'how to architect Forth system'. Even limited by Forth, we need to solve many questions, otherwise Forth will be too chaotic and particular.

This may sound arrogant, but you're wrong, because I can't think of
another way of discussing proposals, use cases, suitability etc. If you
or anyone else shows some code here, or has an idea and raises it for
discussion, or finds a neat solution, then it may be that it's a good
enough idea to try and standardise it. How would you do it?

No. It doesn't matter to anyone but you.

Of course. Who has ever disputed that other systems exist, and that
they have thir merits? No-one here.

I accept that there are other points of view, and that they may be
"correct" (whatever that means).

Let's talk about Forth instead.

Never mistake permanent headcount for anything other than an indicator
of fixed costs. It's cost effective not to employ large permanent
staffs. Ask Uber or Deliveroo, or any number of very large & successful
software companies like Tata.

None of this has any technical content. It's management-speak. If
you had a point to make that is relevant to the actual technical
content of the Forth standard you surely would have made it by now.

Andrew.

No seasons to do it while technical matters are chaotic. I cannot understand where do you want to go, how I can suggest anything from my portfolio?

I don't care about your portfolio. It does not matter. Languge
design is not a marketing exercise.

It doesn't make any sense for anybody to engage with you if you have
no intention to make any technical contribution.

Andrew.

So do you await just a couple of words from me? :) If I state a have a Forth translator, Forth CPU, embedded and PC-based solutions, how do ever imagine the process of aligning all of these with current Standard activity? Note I don't need a help from any kind of Forth guru to improve my technologies. Thanks to Forth, it is so simple so I can found it by myself! :)

> Languge design is not a marketing exercise.

Really? :) Then I can tell you a story. When a new technology is studied, all results are fresh and hard to estimate. This is a thing for science methodology, with experiments, dependencies revealing and tests. On this stage, it is very hard to implement a complete solution and sell it to a customer. Results at the final stage may be better than expected... but not for this customer (may be for another). This is why research activity usually supporting by grants, without serious hope of immediate results.

After you have a complete imagination, how, when and who can implement a complete solution, it is time for market. You can find a customer and suggest a project with features, already familiar for you. No more experiments on-the-fly, no hacks, no 'code gems'. A marketing exercise :)

A common mistake: one wants a money 'right now'. He hears about Forth and suggest a brilliant new solution based on the elite programming language. After this, he goes to study, how to write an interpreter. Results (if any) are divided to two groups: one of them contains failing requirements, and second - far more better than needed, but without previous experience programmer was not able to estimate this.
