| Subject | Recognizers and DT-TOKEN: |
| Message-ID | <oe3i48$qc2$1@dont-email.me> |
RFC-D spec http://amforth.sourceforge.net/pr/Recognizer-rfc-D.pdf
I'm finding DT-TOKEN: a bit restrictive.
: dt-token: ( xt-interpret xt-compile xt-postpone "<spaces>name" -- )
create swap rot , , , ;
' i-object
' c-object
' p-object
dt-token: dt:object
We write a recognizer REC:OBJECTS for objects; it returns DT:OBJECT on
success.
We've separated out the parsing from the action on a token, but we're
restricted as to what we can do with the token actions. The recognizer
and the token are tightly bound. Modifying them requires something along
the lines of DT>INT! DT>COMP! and DT>POST!. DT:TOKENs are supposed to be
opaque.
Problem: There's no way of modifying what DT-TOKEN:s do without either
extra supporting words or per-implementation carnal knowledge.
Solution: I propose replacing DT-TOKEN: with DT-TOKENS, for example
defined as;
: dt-tokens ( xt-interpret xt-compile xt-postpone -- val )
here 2>r swap , , r> r> , ;
' i-object
' c-object
' p-object
dt-tokens value dt:object
Now we can save DT:OBJECT and set new actions.
dt:object to save-dt:object
' i-debug-object
' c-debug-object
' p-debug-object
dt-tokens to dt:object
No other changes are required to the proposal. To tightly bind REC:X to
DT:X as is currently done, use a CONSTANT instead of a VALUE.

It clearly indicates that something is wrong with the recognizer proposal, but I don't agree with your comment about 99.9% of all users. With Forth there is no artificial separation between a compiler maker and an application programmer: it's Forth, all the way down. An application programmer is a compiler maker, and Forth is all about creating the best language for your application. Andrew.

In terms of over-complicated mess, if you'd pointed to most of the Forth object systems out there (Win32Forth has a cracking case) and said "Wow, that's one serious pile of complicated", I would have agreed. I'm not seeing it here. I'm pointing out that a named item is a poor substitute for (as Anton calls them) a handle based item that you can then name. That's not complicated, surely? -- Alex

A classical Andrew Haley. You have no argument, so you evade the
request to elaborate on your statement by throwing in more
unsubstantiated generalities.
The only thing your responses in this thread show is that you have not
understood the original posting (probably because you did not invest
the time needed to understand it); but you took it as a good
opportunity to express your hatred of recognizers.

Hatred might be a bit strong. But it is counterproductive to have someone of Andrew's ability (and I sincerely mean that; his contributions are generally observant and well thought through) serve up little more than "I'm no likee this, no siree" without justification. Perhaps he's explained himself elsewhere, since I understand he wasn't a fan at the Bath 2015 EuroForth conference, something Matthias Trute alluded to in his proposal. I'd appreciate hearing it if so. -- Alex

You've never encountered genuine anti-Indian sentiment, don't know what it looks like, and as a result have picked a petty fight with someone probably completely innocent of such sentiment over what you perceive to be an absurdly out of date 1950s characterization of Indian speech -- that wasn't malicious even in the 1950s. This is a predictable result of poor education in hate-trends. Watching it unfold makes me a little more sympathetic to newspapers that freak out about cartoon frogs and benign hand signs; at least they're *trying* to keep up :-)

Google tells me "likee" is "attributed to various forms of pidgin English, most prominently from Chinese Pidgin English" or as an alternative spelling of "likey" as "(humorous) alternative form of like" (both Wiktionary). "No siree" is American in origin, and appears to be pretty neutral from what I can see. So it must be "likee" (Chinese version) that got his gander up. Absurd. > > This is a predictable result of poor education in hate-trends. No, it's the predictable result of being a virtue signalling snowflake on usenet. -- Alex

I suspect it's not me you've been addressing in this extended tut tut sequence of posts; where you have failed to even explain the bigotry that has so upset you. It's a wider audience to whom you are virtue signalling -- see, here we have the unrepentant bigot. Gaze on him, and feel sad -- truly sad -- that he fails to apologize!
