Which ones? Win32Forth complains about a control structure mismatch at
THEN. gForth gets an invalid memory address at THEN.

Try it with the POSTPONE-defs... Then it works.
In HelFORTH you can use it this way, as the definitions are basically the POSTPONE versions... gForth also does not like it? Maybe - it has also some syntax checking implemented.

Hah, I did try to find a Forth that can do it in Ubuntu...
The usual candidates are gforth, pforth and yforth...

yforth says:

helmar@helmar1:~/n4xx$ yforth
yForth? v0.2 Copyright (C) 2012 Luca Padovani
This program comes with ABSOLUTELY NO WARRANTY.
This is free software, and you are welcome to redistribute it
under certain conditions; see LICENSE for details.

ok
error(13): data-space exhausted.
Aborting...

? I have enough RAM to offer, but the package is broken I think...
I guess nobody uses tailored Forth system. Most people that still use it, use their own...

Gforth has some syntax-checking implemented, but I don't think that's
the issue here. The current development version accepts this code
(and probably compiles it as intended); 0.7 and earlier produces an
"Invalid memory address" error, which is how failed check is reported.
I have not looked closely at it, but my guess is that it has to do
with the (non-compliant) implementation we had up to 0.7.

Gforth 0.7.9_20170308 does not complain and works.
Like Swiftforth and my own Forth.
The only one here won't compile is Win32Forth as you wrote.

You keep making Hugh's mistake with his Straitjacketforth; you think
standards tell you *how* to implement something, rather than describing
what they must do, so you assume ANS requires using ELSE, and you were
so sure you didn't bother checking.

The standard doesn't mention ELSE for CASE/OF/ENDOF/ENDCASE. Not once.
There are many ways of implementing this. For example, it could be
implemented as a jump table or a list scan for values or...

I leave the various implementations to your imagination (or lack of). As
does the standard.

Well, you are right. But I have not seen really conforming table implementations ;) There is not written in ANS that there has to be only one literal before OF and so it destructs the idea to keep optimizations open. As it is that "wrong" one can argue that OF is only a version of IF. In this case ENDOF is also some syntactical sugar to ELSE. I personally dont share such ideas, as I do not add semantics to compilation process (what would it mean, for debugging it's nice) and what I think is best is to do compilation with the threaded code as source if you want to compile something. Forth is not so static as other languages. Only thing static is the code it produced (if there are no crazy code changing technologies are used).

-Helmar

Run-time: ( x1 x2 -- | x1 )

It's not easy, but it is possible.

It's much easier in C, since (to quote) "the expression used in a switch
statement must have an integral or enumerated type, or be of a class
type in which the class has a single conversion function to an integral
or enumerated type."

Eaker's CASE doesn't allow that luxury if you compile immediately. It
requires deferred compilation to optimize properly.

"Deferred compilation"? This is basically what I talk about. You get some code compiled from a Forth system - traditionally as threaded code. If you want to write an optimizing compiler, JIT or what you want, it's better to compile the generated code. In this case there is no - absolutely no - reason to make Eaker-CASE less than it is. It's because of execution before "OF" is that powerful. FIG had also ">OF", "<OF" and "RANGE-OF" ;) Not to forget that the "OF"-words have to be executed in range. You can not sort them that easy. I think that "OF" should be usable as "IF"-replacement where it is suitable and not have to be nested inside "CASE"/"ENDCASE".

-Helmar

Alex McDonald is a liar --- you are making a dupe of yourself to say that he is right --- he is never right about anything, as everything he says is a lie.

Alex McDonald is just taking a gratuitous shot at me, hoping that I won't notice and his lies will get by.
Helmar --- do you really want to participate in blatant lying and troll attacks? --- are you another one of Elizabeth Rather's sycophants who tells big lies everyday in a desperate attempt to support her?

Helmar is new to comp.lang.forth --- I think he is trying to get in with the clique by participating in the troll attacks against me --- he knows that ANS-Forth is a cult and hence that lying is not only expected but is required. Maybe later Alex McDonald can repeat his assertion that I have a "serious misunderstanding of how pointers work" (he has been saying this for four years now). Then Helmar can cheerfully say: "You are right!" This way Helmar can become a full-fledged member of the ANS-Forth cult --- sell his integrity! --- get nothing in return!

The ANS-Forth CASE doesn't support jump-table implementation for the following reasons:
1.) The value given to OF isn't required to be a constant. It could come from a function that is calculated at run-time.
2.) There can be duplicates of the values given to different OF statements.

I have said many many times that a standard should standardize behavior rather than implementation. This is a fundamental aspect of Straight Forth.

CASE is really one of the more blatantly stupid ideas that Elizabeth Rather included in ANS-Forth. It obviously standardizes implementation. It is pathetic that the ANS-Forth sycophants should be supporting CASE in the year 2017 with blatant lies and troll attacks.

CASE was the winner of a "Forth Dimensions" contest for a CASE way back in the late 1980s. The contest rules required the code to be written in Forth-83 --- no assembly-language, and no carnal knowledge --- this prevented any of the contest entries from supporting jump-tables --- then Elizabeth Rather put CASE in ANS-Forth because it was "common practice," meaning that she needs to use somebody else's code that is already written because she can't write code herself.

Hey, I'm not new - go to the archives. I'm here again if you want so. And I'm the better "troll" if you are trolling. And Alex is no liar. I know Alex longer than you. Forth community knows Elizabeth longer than you.

DPANS was not the work of Elizabeth only. In Forth there are a lot of things that could be different. You can do this by talking about and bringing people to your side. Not by blaming someone is a liar. Why liar? Technology talks for itself - in case of DPANS you have some document that says what tech things have to work like. It's probably some work of her life - but listen to Elizabeth if she says something. You can not all them tell liars. "ANS-Forth is crap" I would sign, but well, what would it make better? You have to communicate and in a kind way. Not blaming people to be liars!

Regards,
-Helmar

Alex is a pathological liar. He routinely makes statements such as saying that I don't know what pointers are, that my code doesn't work, etc. --- even when these lies are pointed out, he just tells new lies, or he waits a little while and then goes back to telling the old lies again.

As for the Forth community knowing Elizabeth Rather longer than me, that is because she is highly vocal. In 1994/1995 I was busy writing MFX which worked --- the motion-control program was ported over to the MiniForth processor --- MFX continues to be used for the MiniForth (now called RACE) processor today. By comparison, in 1994/1995 Elizabeth Rather was busy braying about how she alone defines what Forth is, and every Forther in the world must follow her --- this was despite the fact that ANS-Forth had never been tested (the first ANS-Forth compiler was SwiftForth that came out in 1997 and was too full of bugs to be usable until version-3 several years later).

This reminds me of the story of how many higher-ups in the Nazi government said that Ribbentrop was an idiot and should be fired. Hitler said: "Yes, but he knows a lot of people in the English government." Then somebody (I think it was Goebbels) said: "That is true, but the problem is that they know him too." The analogy here is that a lot of people in the programming world know Elizabeth Rather --- she has been the out-spoken self-promoting face of Forth for many decades --- this is why Forth is not popular in the programming world.

> DPANS was not the work of Elizabeth only.

Elizabeth Rather is a professional name-dropper. She listed a lot of people in the ANS-Forth document as supporters, although they don't actually support her. She listed Ray Duncan (of LMI that produced UR/Forth) as a supporter although in 1993 he was on comp.lang.forth describing aspects of ANS-Forth as: "severely brain-damaged." She listed Charles Moore as a supporter although he left ANS-Forth in 1989 (I have a copy of his exit speech; also, since then he has repeatedly said that he doesn't support ANS-Forth). I don't believe that any of the supporters listed on the ANS-Forth document (other than Stephen Pelc) actually support her --- most are like Ray Duncan in that they abandoned Forth after ANS-Forth became the standard.

The whole point of the Forth-200x mailing list is so that the Forth-200x committee can collect names of "supporters" --- even if a person leaves the mailing-list, the Forth-200x committee will continue to list that person as a supporter --- for example, I quit the mailing-list primarily because I was opposed to the Paysan-faked quotations (and Elizabeth Rather was telling a lot of big lies on comp.lang.forth about how my general-purpose data-structures have to rewritten for every application program), but the Forth-200x committee continued to list my name on the RfD for the Paysan-faked quotations as a supporter (Alex McDonald finally quit doing this after I threatened a libel lawsuit, but then Anton Ertl started doing it, so I had to threaten the libel lawsuit again, then he quit doing it).

> It's probably some work of her life - but listen to Elizabeth if she says something.

Why should I listen to an idiot salesperson who has never written a Forth program in her life? Salespeople are always calling me on the phone and informing me that I have been a long-time supporter of their company and a purchaser of their product, and that I should be excited to buy more from them --- I never bought their product --- I just hang up on them.

I don't care if ANS-Forth is the work of Elizabeth Rather's life --- ANS-Forth is just a big steaming pile of salesmanship --- press the flush lever and be done with ANS-Forth finally!

She is totally disrespectful toward me and my work. She tells a lot of lies --- she said on the Forth-200x mailing list that MFX didn't work, the MiniForth project failed, and I got fired --- none of this is true.

She also routinely lies about my novice-package. Here is a typical example:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Does "*every* application" you write use exactly the same kind of data arranged in the same way? If so, having written it once you can reuse it often. If not, you either have to rearrange your data to make it work or modify your "general-purpose" structure.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
I will never forgive her for saying this about my general-purpose data-structures in the novice-package --- she can go to Hell for lying --- when she does go to Hell, the whole place will stink of flaming shit for 1000 years and everybody will want to leave!

You are too fast with blaming people to be liars. I think Elisabeth does not like me too - most people that implement a Forth and do have ideas do have this feeling. She is a bit more active in communication than say Charles H. Moore (while I'd say he is also active in communication).

You can not say "liar" just because someone does not like (or even really knows) your system or does not believe that your way is the best and only one.

Beside, I know MFX for some reasons. Quite a nice thing. Fast and good. I think it was even faster than my very simple HelFORTH-JIT. But not so much faster ;) My JIT worked by unrolling definitions, your MFX was more a really optimizing compiler. But as I did some tests, MFX was also a bit complicated as I remember. Some tricks I could do with HelFORTH where not possible - but at this time I came from RetroForth, not from ANS, so I do not complain about it.

Hey, please, dont blame Alex, Elizabeth or others as "liars". If you want to do, please say what you mean was the "lie".

Hope you do not hate me for my comment,
-Helmar

What's more, it's useless to ask Hugh to support his claims. He will
support "Marcel stole my work" by linking to a thread where Marcel
plainly says that he's talking about Hugh's code. Or he'll support
"Julian threatened to kill me" by linking to a thread where I say that
Hugh is such a repulsive person that my being aware of him has led me
to moderate my opposition to tyrants.

What Hugh does mainly is repeat whatever people are too tired or sick
of constantly refuting. When you don't refute him, he takes that as
assent. When you do refute him, he just forgets the conversation and
tries the same arguments again.

This is the thread where Marcel Hendrix posted my code with my name removed from the copyright notice, then later admitted that he didn't know what it did:

This is the thread where Julien Fondren made a death threat:

This whole thread started out as an attack on my novice-package because I had a late-binding MACRO: in it. Then I wrote an early-binding MACRO: (which is only possible with the disambiguifiers) whereupon the ANS-Forth supporters resorted to threats of violence.

I write ANS-Forth code that works --- in many cases (such as SYNONYM etc.) this is code that the Forth-200x has explicitly stated to be impossible --- the ANS-Forth enthusiasts, such as Julien Fondren and Alex McDonald, aren't posting any Forth code and seem to know little or nothing about Forth programming.

The only time I recall that Julien Fondren posted any Forth code, was this thread:

https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/comp.lang.forth/0-W-72ziaOo

This is the code he posted:

This is pathetically low-quality code! Linked lists are the simplest data-structure there is, and yet he screwed it up! And, most humorously, he thinks that he is qualified to write a tutorial on linked lists! His only qualification is that he brown-noses Elizabeth Rather and the Forth-200x committee that she appointed. He really doesn't know anything about the subject though.

People who know very little seem to be very quick to teach others. Here is another example of ignorance and arrogance colliding:

I would recommend that anybody who wants to learn about the ANS-Forth culture should read through the threads I linked above. The ANS-Forth cult really show their true colors in each of these threads.

Note that my assumption of how IF works (that IF is immediate) is wrong under VFX but is right under SwiftForth --- the ANS-Forth document is ambiguous because it allows VFX and SwiftForth to be incompatible, although both are ANS-Forth compliant --- the ANS-Forth standard is meta-wrong!

Here is the sycophant Albert van der Horst agreeing on the impossibility of writing SYNONYM in ANS-Forth:

Here is SYNONYM FAST-SYNONYM and ALIAS written in ANS-Forth (only possible with the disambiguifiers):

See how reliable this is?

All of this serious-sounding language and yet the real criticism is
"I, Hugh, would not do it that way." Again he links the thread himself
so that anyone can see that. And anyone who's followed clf for even a
week has seen more code from me, but Hugh still makes an attempt of
attacking my 'credentials'.

This is a twitter bot.

It has nothing to do with your personal preference if you like to be called a "liar". I basically do not want to read it ;) It's not to defend you (you take it as it is), but it's in defence for others. It's not a good style to have such posts and there is no need for it. For me at least he should quote the lie...
