With W10 I could install all the original drivers from the Acer web site. It is now even faster than with XP or W7 a few years ago, readability is stunning (despite that little 1024x600 screen), and power management is better (less heat, less fan noise). One can't squeeze more drops out of the thing... ;-)

The workaround is simply to load the older nvidia driver as a package (apt-get install Nvidia-305-xx or similar -- YMMV), and then running the x configurator for the nvidia card. In the meanwhile, you should be able to pick a lower resolution standard VESA compatible VGA setting to make X work, or you can simply work from a text console if you have the Unix/Linux chops for that. Hope this helps ... cheers, Rob.

I've searched and the video hardware on my netbook is the Paulsbo hardware (built into the Intel Atom Chipset, from what I can discern). Reading around it seems this particular chipset is getting no love whatsoever from the Linux/Open Source community, due to the closed/non-proprietary nature of the graphics hardware. I'll just let it ride as it is since I'll shortly be going back to my beloved 11 year old Toshiba Tecra, which runs Mint like the wind :-) Mark

I looked up LXDE and its very similar to Cinnamon which is my favorite desktop with Mint. I keep debating if I should dump Windows and switch to Linux I keep having major problems with Windows, unfortunately I signed up for preview, and now I can get off until the next non-preview release, but the releases have been really buggy. The main thing that keeps holding me back is the software, mind you I tested a lot of my software and about 90% will run fine on Mint using Wine but that 10% is a deal breaker, it's my Photo, and Video editing software that I have not tested but I doubt it will work. Photoshop, Photoshop Dark Room, Photoshop Elements, DVDFAB, and Adobe Premiere among some of my critical must work software that I don't have a Linux compatible version. Interestingly my various Forth software will work fine under Wine, and the commercial versions, 8th, VFX Forth, and Swift Forth have native Linux versions available. This PC that I'm running on right now has two SSD drives one with Windows 10 Pro X64 , and the other with Mint Linux X64 18.0 LTS with Cinnamon desktop. I been using Mint since version 10 with hardly any problems at all, the same can't be said for Windows although Win 10 is their best OS so far unless you are on a preview version.. -- Cecil - k5nwa

Why not install Linux as your native OS and install Windows as a VM? Oracle's VirtualBox hosts windows perfectly and is free. Worth a try.

(For new copies of Win10 the licence key is recoverable from the BIOS) Every useful machine at my home and two at work have Windows re-installed in a virtual box. This dates from my first dual core laptop, and includes XP, Win7, and Win10. (I once tested Win3.1, 95 and 98, but had forgotten how to use 3.1:) I'm not sure if this is important, but most copies of VirtualBox i'm using have been installed and are updated from the Oracle repo rather than ubuntu. USB connections can be assigned to the virtualised machine, or connected for one-off use with a few key strokes. Some programming dongles need permaneny USB assignments because they disconnect part way through the flashing process. Hope this helps, happy exploring, Jan Coombs --
