I'm mostly using Starting Forth as a text but, as has been pointed out by others here, the book contains some dated materials. Pretty much you can skip the block-files section; would only be useful now on systems without an operation system. Also the information on the return stack is missleading, at least in the earlier versions of the book. Other than that Starting Forth is pretty good in my opinion. As for Forths, I'm mostly using gforth as it's available for most systems without a bunch of dependencies and it's a modern Forth. It even runs on Android so you can do Forth instead of listening in those manditory office meetings. ;) Other Forths I'm using are pforth and ff, but both of those are more tempermental and missing some common Forth words, ie. ff doesn't have LEAVE even though it's a core word. Some other free resources I've found helpful: http://forth-standard.org/ http://field-theory.org/articles/starting-forth/index.html http://galileo.phys.virginia.edu/classes/551.jvn.fall01/primer.htm http://www.mpeforth.com/arena/ProgramForth.pdf
