Software is/has-to evolve beyond the <20's fly-boy fun> stage. It's not supposed to be fun, like playing jazz. "You-think, it-just-happens" is good for the horse-&-rider-mode: like *nix/mc or *M$\nc [do they still offer it?] or ETHOberon's chord-kluxing, where you've got immediate feedback, and can steer back on to the track. Also sequences of piped-filters under *nix is GREAT, because you can test each stage, and if it's OK up-to stage N, you won't have to go back to the drawing board. But serious programming should be constrained, with strict type checking etc.
