Yeah, it wasn't working in the colon definition I'd originally written
it in, because another assert(...) I had someplace else in the program
had an accidental wrong stack effect inside the assert, and that
apparently confused all the asserts.  I got it working and tried to
cancel the post, but I guess it got out.
