I've tried it a few times and it just doesn't work. The Windows common controls are a complete and utter mess. Every one is different. There's no consistency. Each uses a set of dozens of messages, notifications, styles, structs and functions that are different, and incompatible with, all others. A feature available on one control (vertical text justify for example) is not available on another. You can't draw into any control at will. Some have a discrete border, others have it as part of the client area. Etc. Who designed this heap of rubbish? I'm not surprised Swing does it that way, and my next attempt will use a similar approach. Really, programming this stuff is not that difficult. All my controls will use the same, small, compatible sets of messages and features. However I need at least the ability to create a top-level window, and some very basic graphics capability; and there might not be an easy way to do that on Windows 8 if all C interfaces are removed! I can see myself dusting off my soldering iron and building my own hardware again in a couple of years... -- Bartc

For non-production work, you would typically solder sockets, and chips would be inserted into those. But it's possible that some components now only come in surface-mount forms that need special equipment, that would make things tricky. -- Bartc

I haven't really gotten around to implementing this (or worked out exactly what the API is going to look like).

Or were you doing 3D stuff and textures, etc.? It would seem that all you'd gain with your approach is cross-platform capability, but in doing so, creating a dependence on another monstrosity. To me, it seems like just abstracting some platform primitives (or a bit higher-level) would be much less work than even just figuring out OpenGL's complexities. ? > it is also a pain because what I am using it for now implies the use > of a client/server GUI (where a socket may exist between the > "client/user" and the "server" which contains the logic behind the > UI). Motif? ;) > my initial API was done similar to OpenGL, namely: begin/end pairs and get/set functions (using handles), just with more strings (I took API design ideas mostly from OpenGL and the Win32 GDI, with a few misc ideas from GTK). this turned out to kind-of suck. basically, begin/end pairs were used to submit widgets or forms, and typically forms or menus were modified by entirely replacing them (by begining a new form using the old one's ID-number), though some properties could be changed via get/set calls, which would be passed a widget-handle. my more recent idea had more been based on the idea that widgets are basically structs (similar to "entities") which can be linked together, and linked onto "containers" or "surfaces". in the protocol though, it will probably all just boil down to delta messages and handles though (so, any changed variables in the server-side structure are relayed as delta messages across to the other end, where they update the client-side version of the widget). likewise, if the user interacts with the widget, a message will be sent back indicating this. I haven't yet gotten to this though...

MS has been so faithful to Intel CPUs. Thus Ms missed the OS dominating best time for cpus in the arm family. Now android=LINUX +JVM and IOS from apple are attracting money away from the PC industry. If MS wants to fight in other CPUs, how can MS does not chunk out a better C/C++ compiler for other CPUs in the world?

If you were doing graphics twenty years or more ago, then this was quite common! (I think my first attempts with raster graphics were in '79...). These days I would prefer to use OpenGL, a rare example of a well-designed API, and available for many languages! Including C, which allows bindings to be created for languages not officially supported (like mine..). However OpenGL was never popular with MS, and was only grudgingly supported. Hopefully that will still be available, but probably stuck at some ancient version. -- Bartc

I did some graphics programming about 20 years ago (2D charting of realtime data), *but* I used the Quinn-Curtis Graphics Library with the "Microsoft Optimizing Compiler", woo hoo!. (Ah yes, Programmer's Workbench, Codeview... what a waste of time, LOL! Can't forget MS QuickC--lots of fun. I bet I still have the manuals. I'm sure I have all the TurboC, TASM and Borland C++ stuff. But I digress.) > > These days I would prefer to use OpenGL, a rare example of a > well-designed API, and available for many languages! I'll look at it again for sure when doing any graphics work. Also, though, I've heard that the latest DirectX APIs are damn nice. Have you looked at them? Not that you'd want to use them and give up cross-platform capability, but just to evaluate the API design.

They only provide OpenGL 1.1 in the base Windows install. The version of OpenGL supported on Windows is down to which graphics card you have and what version of the drivers for said graphics card you are using. So it really doesn't matter what Microsoft do in relation to OpenGL you just need to make sure you have a decent graphics card which has drivers that support the version of OpenGL you want to use.

That almost changed in Windows 8. MS wanted to make OpenGL a wrapper around the DirectX API, which would have meant that OpenGL couldn't provide any feature not available via DirectX, nor be any faster. In the end, that didn't happen because of pushback from nVidia and AMD, who are too big to be steamrollered, even by MS.

In a "slightly" expanded view, there is everything else. In a "slighty more" expanded view, there is a homeless man who can't make sense of such "unholy" acts perpetrated by those who have "risen to the top" (of the money machine), but wouldn't "code for food", nonetheless. DirectX: Microsoft: "money is power, power is money, surely evil". OpenGL: "Open Source". "Freedom (tm)". Oh, and the homeless guy? Rust never sleeps, it just fades away.

The Win32 API is still available in its entirety in Win 8 (probably some changes as always). Metro apps only can access a subset of it because Metro apps are very high-level, sandboxed apps. Think of Metro apps like Java apps. At least think of them as being at some level more abstracted-away-from the Windows core. That's my take on it anyway. Don't take my word for it--go to the MS sites and learn all about it from the horse's mouth.

The way you clipped it makes is look like I wrote it if you don't analyze it.

That is not true though. At least not any more than developing on prior versions of Windows. I mean, you can't use *just* standard C to develop a GUI app for Windows (unless you don't use the Windows APIs). If you choose to develop for Windows using MS's high-level frameworks (.Net or WinRT), then you have to accept the ways that MS provides it to you. If you choose to develop even higher-level *style* apps *based upon* those frameworks, then you just have to bite the bullet if you don't like the paradigm. Luckily, though, if you are a C or C++ programmer, you don't have to *stand* anything MS shoves at you--you can create or replace whatever you want with what you want. > This being true, It isn't true. > this reason might not > be apparent but it certainly has serious implications, more than > enough to justify some amount of wild faliling.

Win32 is still there, but just a subset of it is callable from Metro apps. I really don't see the hullabuloo about Metro apps. Some applications/platforms fit the model, others don't. I haven't investigated it much, but Metro seems to be a smart phone GUI put on the desktop, which sounds like a very dumb idea. On a phone, or tablet maybe, but on a desktop? Surely that showing of that coffee table interface where one could move stuff around with their hands because the surface was a touch screen has something to do with this (read, Bill Gate's ego). MS seems to be just a bunch of propeller heads after the Win 8 UI fiasco. But then again, the first thing I do after installing the latest and "greatest" version of Windows and after playing around with the "new and improved" GUI for a bit, is go looking for the same classic GUI I've been using since Win 95, so it may be just me. Heck, maybe y'all have abandoned your desktops for your smartphone ages ago, or don't even know what one of those desktop (computer) things is! I don't even have a smartphone. The last thing I want when I'm away from my computer, is to be away WITH another computer! I got off the MS bandwagon of "new-and-improved" technologies early. The first incling I had of their strategy is when they came out with DDE and then everything in their arsenal had to have 'DDE' in the name. Then it was OLE. COM. MFC, .Net, WinRT, Metro... it never ends. I feel very lucky that I haven't spent much time on learning MS-proprietary technologies.

Further, if one has an operating system product line, and they have a paradigm they call "deskop apps" and another called "Metro-style apps", shouldn't users conclude that "desktop apps" are for desktop computers and that "Metro-style" apps are for some other type of computer and that an OS that presents itself in "Metro-style" is not an OS meant for a desktop computer? Does MS employ any analysts? If so, they should try using consultants instead!
