Once again you have a reading comprehension problem. We were talking
about the compilers *I USED*. I did not know every compiler on the
market at the time.
You need help in learning to comprehend a lot of things. Reading is
just one of them.

That is correct. And the code generated would *properly* convert the
value. That's why code was included in the reverse order of being
called. Many programmers didn't use "different compilation units".
They might have had separate source files, but everything was included
in one compilation unit.
It solved the problem of *NOT* converting the parameter, causing the
wrong value to be passed.

(1) You have not supplied any evidence that any compiler from the time
did this conversion.
(2) There is ample evidence (provided you don't just say I'm making it
up) that many compilers did not do this conversion.
(3) K&R, the reference which, according to you, all good compilers
of the time followed, explicitly stated that this conversion did not
occur.
(4) You agree that this code will break on any K&R-conforming compiler.

Err, the one where you say you agree that the compiler does not do as
you said? All of these points stand.

The proof is in the code. I never agreed the compiler does not do as I
said. I proved it does do as I said.
Now it's up to you to disprove my claim. But trolls never do that.

Good. Any chance you can provide some evidence that a compiler from that
era does as you claim for this code:
f(a)
double a
{ ... }
g() { f(42); } /* A Stuckle compiler converts this to 42.0 */
? None has so far been found.

As I said - I don't have all of those compilers available any more.
Can you prove that they DIDN'T? You weren't even out of diapers at the
time, much less programming...

So no. That's fine, I don't expect you to supply evidence. Can you
even identify one of the compilers that did this? (You said there were
at least two).
As a C expert you would have known that the vast majority of other
compilers did not do this so I would think it would be memorable -- your
specially ordered code would break on a normal K&R C compiler of the era.

No, and I'm not going to bother with trying to give you any evidence.
You'll just claim it's faked, anyway - like you did with the MSC output.

I think there are two main reasons people continue to reply to Stuckle; one reasonably defensible the other less so. First the less reasoanble: as was mentioned elsewhere it's like picking a scab. One knows one shouldn't, but it's just so irritating it's hard not to. Second the defensible reason: Stuckle writes decently well and newer users could be duped into believing that he's more knowledgable than he actually is, and thus could be misled. One reason for replying to otherwise unreasonable people on USENET is to leave corrections in the historical record. This could, perhaps, be mitigated if the comp.lang.c FAQ were restarted and included a section on well-known cranks and trolls like Jerry Stuckle and Rick Hodgin saying, essentially, that anything they write should be viewed skeptically. Has anyone heard from Steve Summit in the last few years? >If he is known to be a troll, then say so, and I will stop >replying to him right now. And so should everybody else. One reason for replying to otherwise > unreasonable people on USENET is to leave corrections in the historical > record. I also reply to him for that reason. I can also think of another less reasonable reason - arguing against him can be entertaining. And because it is clear that he knows what he is doing, you don't need to feel guilty about mocking him. There are other reasonable reasons too. Some of the posts in threads like these can be interesting and informative. I have learned a few things about the history of C, its standards and its tools from other posters in this thread. Jerry's nonsense can sometimes be quite good at provoking people to post information or make people think about things. And sometimes I reply to Jerry's posts because he is saying something correct (or almost correct) and useful. It is not uncommon for him to make reasonably sensible posts for a while - it is only after he has got something wrong that he goes down a path of steadily more wild claims, denial, and insults in an attempt to justify his original mistake.

He is ill-mannered, and he seems to be under the impression that it is necessary to be like that to deal with other people who, admittedly, can be difficult at times. I rarely respond to Jerry simply because his programming interests and mine don't overlap much. However on the occasions we do interact as far as I remember he's usually been reasonable.

This is no longer comp.lang.c, it's comp.lang.trollbaiting. Richard
