Build this program using an implementation which defines "environ". IIRC
this is POSIX, but I may be wrong and it could be Ganuck; in any case,
your code should use <unistd.h>, and I'm surprised that it doesn't
already.

FYI, "Ganuck" is Richard's silly nickname for GNU.

And I still don't know whether environ is GNUbile or POSIX, despite you
and all other GNUheads being perfectly capable of adding that
information.

Embrace and extend, embrace and extend.

environ is defined by POSIX.
http://pubs.opengroup.org/onlinepubs/9699919799/functions/environ.html

Looking back at the original article, I'm not sure why you think the
OP's code needs to use <unistd.h>. Environ is not declared in
<unistd.h>; you need to declare it yourself as:

    extern char **environ;

(I can't think of any good reason for that, but that's the way it is.)

I'd like to know the story behind the GNU-bashing.

I think I've seen you lash at proprietary software, so you're
probably not a shill. What's your OS of choice?

The story is that I see GNU being accepted, and sometimes even praised,
for things that Microsoft, Apple and others are roundly trounced for. I
don't like being embrace-and-extended regardless of who does it, and for
what commercial _or_ anarchistic purposes.

IOW, I'm not shilling for anything, I'm trying to give a bit of
well-deserved counterpoint to all the GNU shilling that's going on.

If you fail to see the difference between a world where Microsoft
calls the shots, and one where GNU dominates (and uses that lead
to push some of their pet extensions) then I don't want to waste
my time discussing GNU with you.

And right on cue, Microsoft delivers!

Windows 10 now bundles keylogger as standard component (and there
was much rejoicing at NSA HQ)

Apparently, "no privacy" is now the new normal.

This assumes that the windows machine has internet connection.

My windows machine has no internet connection, the router will deny any
internet access.

If it /never/ has an internet connection ever again, that might work.
But if all keystrokes are logged in files, then all it takes are those
couple of minutes you might be connected each year, to update
applications or whatever, or to upload your work, then that data can be
sent all at once.

And most people aren't developers who can work year after year on a
self-contained machine with no external connection. They will need the
internet for emails, social networks, shopping, banking, movies, ...

Also, with many machines that might have built-in WiFi, 3G, or some form
of wireless connectivity (which is pretty much all of them), you can
never be sure that it can't connect to the internet, unless you shield
it in lead, put it in a Faraday cage, then make sure you never turn it on.

That's the cheap way to get security. Do real work offline - have a
cheap dedicated online machine for Usenet etc.

Of course, I don't follow my own advice. I'm running Ubuntu on my one
and only box.

Please be more precise: what are you trying to do?
Compiling OpenSSL from source, or compiling a program that uses OpenSSL?
What platform are you using?
Exactly what command gave this result?
(Let's assume there is no mind-reading and clairvoyance)
