Only label names have function scope. An object name defined in the
outermost block of a function has block scope, and the same rules apply
as for any other block.

You seem to be on auto-pilot. The example above is supposed to be a
sketch, not a complete, working and meaningful program. If it makes you
happier, imagine p initialised to point to some initialised variable in
the same scope; it doesn't change the point I was making.
And by function scope I mean names declared at the start of the top
block level which makes them visible -- barring shadowing -- throughout
the function.
BTW do labels have their own namespace? Because this appears to work:
{int L;
goto L;
L:
}
If so then some are of my remarks about there being up two identical
names valid in a block, A from outside, and a second A when declared
part-way through, aren't quite right. Another can be a label, so there
can be three identical but distinct identifiers recognised within the
same block. Or, with struct tags, could that be four:
struct A {int A;};
int A;
{ A; // outer int A
struct A A; // outer tag A and new inner A
A; // inner A
goto A; // inner label A
A:;
}
Well, this is jolly handy if you're stuck thinking up new identifiers.
But seriously, does a language really need this?
Compare a language where 'A' in a function can only refer to one thing,
and another where, if there are N separate blocks, 'A' can refer to one
of 4N or whatever different things (I don't even know how to work out
the number). Is it really just as easy to implement the latter language?
Or, for a reader, to always be on top of what's what?

Would you favor us with a glossary of your own redefinitions of
terms defined and used by the Standard? Failing that, would you at
least give a "Heads up!" when you use a Standard-defined term to mean
something other than what the Standard means? Just as a kindness, so
that when you write `double' (for example) we don't leap to the
unwarranted conclusion that you're talking about a floating-point type.
By the way, there is an actual difference between "function scope"
and "block scope" (I'm using the Standard's meanings here; sorry if
you find this objectionable). Here's an illustration of the two:
void function(void) {
int x = 2; // identifier with block scope
if (x > 0)
printf("Hello, world!\n");
{
double x = 42.0; // identifier with block scope
if (x > 10)
printf("Goodbye, cruel world!\n");
}
}
if (x > 10)
printf("Is this the afterlife?\n");
}
The identifier `x' refers to different objects at different points
in the code. The association of `x' to object depends on the scope
of `x', which is in turn tied to the block containing its use. If
`x' had function scope there could be only one `x'-to-object mapping,
and the second declaration would be an error.
void dysfunction(void) {
{
label: // identifier with function scope
printf("Hello, world!\n");
}
{
label: // diagnostic required
printf("Goodbye, cruel world!\n");
}
}
The identifier `label' has function scope, so the second appearance
(in a different block but still in the same function) clashes with
the first. If `label' had block scope, the second appearance would
be independent of the first.

Block scopes allow you to re-use names from outer scopes for a different purpose, provided the new definition is provided. And here, if I'm re-using 'function scope' to mean something different from the Standard, then that's OK because I've defined what I mean. (And you can't argue that my usenet posts are in the same scope as the Standard.) > By the way, there is an actual difference between "function scope" > and "block scope" Yes, I know. You didn't argue for anything; you simply wrote "Just keep the
'int A' at function scope and be done with it." That is, you used
the phrase "function scope" to mean something entirely different
from "function scope." I wish you'd stop that.

Since I disagree with the point you're making, it's going to be
easier for me to understand you if you use an example that directly
demonstrates the point. If I see something that doesn't make sense
to me, it's hard to tell whether it's something you left out for
simplicity or something I think is wrong. (No offense intended.)

That's not function scope. It's block scope, for the top-level block of
the function definition. If I seem to be on auto-pilot, it's because
I'm correcting the same errors.

Yes. N1570 6.2.1p3:
A label name is the only kind of identifier that has *function
scope*. It can be used (in a goto statement) anywhere in the
function in which it appears, and is declared implicitly by its
syntactic appearance (followed by a : and a statement).
The word "anywhere", if I'm not mistaken, implies that it's not hidden
by declarations with the same name. A quick experiment with gcc seems
to confirm this. (I don't use gotos enough to have run into this
myself.)
Logically, a label name can only appear immediately after a "goto"
keyword or immediately before the ":" in a labeled-statement, so there's
no ambiguity with other declarations of the same identifier. Similarly,
a struct tag can only appear immediately after the "struct" keyword.

Does a language really need to go out of its way to forbid it?
Should the language forbid defining l11ll11 and ll1ll11 as identifiers
in the same scope?
"Doctor, it hurts when I do this."
How much real-world code have you seen that actually suffers from the
problems you're talking about?

It's always easier to understand well-written code.

Oh, stop fighting against windmills.
I don't agree with the small-scopers, either, but I _am_ intelligent and
honest enough to admit that they intend to use the smallest _reasonably
possible_ scope, not the absolute, irrational, smallest scope you can
get away with. Nobody in this newsgroup, not even the most extreme
small-scoper, would create a new block for every single declaration.
Except perhaps you, Malcolm, and Jerry.
> This is the sort of nonsense I object to.
And because you _have_ taken it to a nonsensical extreme, it's also the
kind of nonsense nobody is proposing. Except you.

A sensible programmer might just not reuse the name but give the second
variable a distinct name. If I would see such a mess from an employee we
would have a serious talk.

Taking your arguments to the end, why not declare all variables a file
scope.
Just because you do not understand what blocks are for does not make it
pointless.

The question is how to use it effectively. We've got a sub-discussion on structured programming. One suggestion, not absurd on the face of it, is that C blocks should also be structured programming blocks. However C doesn't enforce that. Rejecting a feature (e.g. goto) does not mean "you don't understand it".

Call me super-human, but I can cope with a good deal more than three levels of nesting, and with variables defined at more than three types of scope. I think most people I know are super-human too.

You might be able to manage four or five levels, I wouldn't argue too much about that, though I've got good theoretical reasons to believe the psychological limit is three. But no-one can cope with arbitrary levels, hold a list of variables in your head, and, without referring back to the source, tell me which scope each variable is in.

I don't believe you. If I did, I would say that you shouldn't be
programming.

In fact I'm arguing that we should think of "subroutines" as "blocks", that's a better way into it (argument currently on ice because it's emerged that too many people fundamentally don't understand structured programming to have that discussion).

Malcolm, this might come as a shock, but "disagree with Malcolm about" and "fundamentally don't understand" are not /necessarily/ synonymous. -- Richard Heathfield Email: rjh at cpax dot org dot uk "Usenet is a strange place" - dmr 29 July 1999 Sig line 4 vacant - apply within

In fact they are exclusive. C blocks aren't identical to structured programming blocks, because labels are allowed. There's also break and continue which muddy things. They are close however, and almost certainly inspired by them. Denis Ritchie is no longer with us so he can't confirm how much he knew about structured programming when C was being developed, and he certainly didn't follow the rules blindly. But I'd be surprised if he wasn't influenced.

I vaguely recall the "single exit" principle as being critical to "structured programming" but we're going back thirty or more years to dig that truffle up. Not even as an undergrad were we expected to take it seriously. And even as an undergrad, I was generally able to reason in state machines. The "single exit" principle led to such patterns as printing off reams of green-bar paper with hand-drawn lines to show nesting level This was more than slightly ludicrous. -- Les Cargill

And neither have you. What is there to understand about them? I just dislike them. I first across begin..end blocks used not just to bracket multiple statements, but also to introduce a new scope where variables could be declared, in 1976. I didn't think much of them then either. While C has introduced a couple of new twists of its own. -- Bartc

That seems to be hotly denied. A subroutine can be replaced by a block, unless it uses statics (in which case you need to fix up a bit of trivial machinery to allow the same access), or unless it is recursive. That concept also seems to be causing huge problems. Block scope is undesirable except at function level - now that's an argument worth having. Clearly if we inlined every single function call, we'd want local scope. There is maybe a case for doing that, if only to show people what structured programming means. If they went through the exercise, maybe they'd "get it". But there's a very strong argument that subroutines should be short enough for a human programmer to verify that they are correct, by inspection. If you need block scope, I'd dispute that that property holds.
