#91192 — Vacation time

From"James R. Kuyper" <jameskuyper@verizon.net>
Date2016-07-27 21:39 -0400
SubjectVacation time
Message-ID<9c991c4a-682a-7d2e-55ac-a6b30b982076@verizon.net>
I realize that I have not been very productive lately, so I arguably
don't deserve a vacation, but I think taking one may help me regain some
of my lost productivity.
I'd like to take time off for a vacation from 2016-08-18 to 2016-08-25.
We're planning to visit my father and sister-in-law in Phoenix, AZ,
neither of whom have met the twins yet. Because my wife's vacation time
is constrained by the Montgomery College class schedule, we don't really
have much freedom to postpone this vacation, so I hope you'll approve
it. I'll find the official request form tomorrow, and send it in, but I
thought I shouldn't put off telling you about it any longer.

Well, you have *my* permission to take a vacation...

Read his post. He asked me to approve it. I did. I'm not sure whether
*every* c.l.c. reader needs to approve it or just one, but I've done
what I could.

Guys, can you knock it off? Anyone can make that mistake. If you have to
poke fun at James's slip, please at least snip the private content,
rather than replicating it over and over again for the search engines?

I thought James was making fun of us!!! I'm sorry that I failed to snip
the personal info... it didn't occur to me.

I wish I'd thought of passing it off as a joke - but it didn't occur to
me that it could be interpreted that way.

In order to make this particular mistake, I had to ignore no less than
five different pieces of evidence that I was not sending the message
where I intended to:
1. "From:" was my personal e-mail account rather than my work account.
2. There was no "To:"
3. "CC:" was automatically filled in with my personal e-mail address
4. "Newsgroups:" was automatically filled in with "comp.lang.c"
5. The automatically filled-in signature required by my employer was
missing.

I was simply tired enough not to notice any of those except the last
one, and I was too tired to realize what the last one meant. All the
precautions in the world are useless, if you're too tired to remember to
use them.

I'm sure we've all been there. (I have four kids, but never had the
"privilege" of having to deal with twins.)

But, if we can't make fun of such a mistake, then why bother with Usenet in
the first place? (And it was certainly a nice change of pace from the
"please do my homework" posts.)

Thank you, and also Real Troll and Charles Richmond - I really needed to
have additional copies of inadvertently publicized private information
spread around, just to make my day complete.

I waited at work for 30 minutes after accidentally posting that message,
delaying some obviously badly needed sleep, waiting for it to show up on
either eternal-september or Google Groups, so I could cancel it as soon
as it showed up - but for some reason it didn't. The cancellations would
have only affected those two archives, but that's better than nothing.

But not the repost. I've reported it to Google for abuse (private or

Once a post gets out, it's all over. So far as I can determine, almost
no usenet servers honor cancel requests.

In my experience, usenet servers honor cancel requests, but only those
that come from their own subscribers. I'm registered with both
eternal-september and Google Groups, and as far as I can tell, both
servers have honored my cancel request - my original message no longer
shows up one either one, only the responses to it.

First, I apologize for not snipping the personal information -- it
didn't occur to me. I meant to poke a little fun, and didn't realize it
would be offensive. Had I realized it, I wouldn't have made the post.

Your original post still appears in my news feed (so far as I know,
it isn't locally cached). I've now made a couple of tries at canceling
my post, and every try is getting a 441 response, with the message "not
your article" (which is more than I used to get; the last time I tried
cancel an article, years ago, it appeared to take it but the article
didn't disappear). So far as I can determine I'm sending the
appropriate identification, but it doesn't seem to be recognizing me.
Sorry...

FWIW, I'm also on eternalseptember, and the original article in the
thread appears. I'm sure I'm not the only one to laugh over the OP and
the silly replies without considering privacy issues.

Don't waste your time cancelling anything because you can't. Google
knows everything and forgets nothing so before you post anything, take a
deep breadth and think before clicking on that "Send" button. If you
are under the influence of something then don't go near a computer!
It's dangerous and you'll come to regret it.

James cancelled his original article on Google Groups and
eternal-september, and it was actually deleted from Google Groups.

If you use Google Groups, it's probably worthwhile to (try to)
cancel an article if you need to. As for eternal-september.org,
contacting the admin *might* be worthwhile.

I've had independent confirmation that Google honored my "delete"
request. The option to delete a message only appears if you're logged in
to Google Groups using an account you've set up with them, and only if
the e-mail address on that account matches the "From:" header on the
message, and the option disappears if you wait too long before trying to
use it (1 day?) - but the option does work, when available.

As for Google "knowing everything": I save my posted messages, and last
time I checked, Google was missing more than 1/3 of them (mostly the
older ones that they should have inherited from Deja News).

I was "under the influence" of a long day spent trying (and failing) to
meet an important deadline.
