I think this misses the point Kernighan was making. Given the
assumptions in his statement, being smarter means you can write and
debug cleverer code -- but there's going to be even more code that
you're smart enough to write, but not smart enough to debug.

Little things like using parens to group things rather than depending on operator precedence or making tests explicit like if (strcmp(something, "foo") == 0). The next person that has to work on the code might not be as clever as I. I've spent too much time cleaning up after people who weren't quite as smart as they thought they were and thought defensive programming was a waste of time because nothing ever goes wrong. There's elegance, and then there's twisted.

That only solves the problem if you can figure out how to become substantially smarter between the time that you write your code and the time that you debug your code. This looks like a complicated way to count newlines, even given the edge
case you want to cover.
Also I would always favour a return value over a void function that
"returns" via a pointer argument. I know you do this because it matches
your tok() call, but I'd still prefer a plain return.

I don't see any poit to this if and I can't see how the comment relates
to it.
> /* walk each file */

This is odd too. You stop the loop after finding a file that can't be
opened, but you don't report the error. And the behaviour of the
program is further complicated by the redundant fopen above.

name gets assigned by the next statement so there's no point to having
this one.

I'd report failed opens rather than report zero lines.

This can go very wrong if f == NULL!

Except you count a line even when there is no input. That seems wrong
(though hardly important).
> As you can see, handling "-"
> arguments can be surprisingly complicated.
I think it's easier than you make out. I'd do something like the
following (V2 would return 0 only if all files could be opened):
#include <stdio.h>
#include <string.h>
static size_t count_lines(FILE *fp)
{
size_t lines = 0;
int last = EOF, c;
while ((c = getc(fp)) != EOF) {
lines += c == '\n';
last = c;
}
return lines + (last != '\n' && last != EOF);
}
static void report_lines(const char *fname, FILE *fp)
{
printf("%zu %s\n", count_lines(fp), fname);
}
int main(int argc, char **argv)
{
if (argc < 2)
report_lines("stdin", stdin);
else for (int i = 1; i < argc; i++)
if (strcmp(argv[i], "-") == 0)
report_lines("stdin", stdin);
else {
FILE *fp = fopen(argv[i], "r");
if (fp) {
report_lines(argv[i], fp);
fclose(fp);
}
else fprintf(stderr, "Can't open %s\n", argv[i]);
}
return 0;
}

Really?

And if you are stuck with filenames containing space characters:

'wc' does more than just count lines.
