By mistake I tpe gmke -j .

Gmake being gnu make.

since then on one system, the C compiler has not beeing working properly.

Test errors, programmes not seeing the correct data,
socket not starting ...

What can I do to rectify this situation?

Please provide some evidence, because this statement is highly unlikely.

The -j option should only directly affect the files created by the run
of gmake where you used that option. The effect might propagate to other
things that were built using one of those files. If you erase all such
files, and start over again, any problem actually related to your use of
the -j option should disappear.

I strongly suspect that many, if not all, of the symptoms you describe
had nothing to do with your use of the -j option - there's no obvious
reason why they should. If I'm right about that, you can expect those
symptoms to continue occurring until you track down and correct the
actual cause of those problems.

I presume you mean that you typed "gmake -j". I don't usually complain
about typos, but these make your question difficult to read.

The "make" command will execute whatever commands are specified in the
default Makefile. Those commands will have whatever effect they would
have if you typed them at a shell prompt. Without knowing what's in
your Makefile, it's impossible to know what your "gmake -j" command has
done.

There's a convention for Makefiles to have a "clean" target which will
remove any generated files. It's possible that typing "gmake clean"
will undo whatever damage you've done. I accept no responsibility for
any consequences, which again are entirely dependent on the contents of
the Makefile.

(The default makefile may or may not be called "Makefile". Consult the
documentation for details.)

Beware of coincidences!

gmake -j <number>
makes <number> of parallel compiling threads with different files

Once gmake finishes nothing has changed, the C compiler can't be
affected, etc etc.

This is just a coincidence and you should look for the error elsewhere

Well this morning comipling Exim 4.86 RC5 I got

2015-07-21 09:13:17 Exim configuration error in line 763 of /usr/exim/configure.out:
"routers" is not a known configuration section name

Did not happen in RC4.

Just an exmaple.

And what got this to do with the compiler? That's not a compiler
error message, nor would I assume that a file named configure.out
would contain any error messages from a compiler. Looks more like
the output from some 'configure' script, which is run before the
compiler ever gets invoked.

Of course, if you run 'gmake' on some unknown makefile all
kind of things could happen, depending of what's the con-
tent of the makefile. A makefile is just a file with of
commands to execute (not necessarily always starting a
compiler, mind you), so running 'gmake' (with or without
-j) on some unkown makefile is not much different to running
some script or program you don't know what it's going to do.
I could easily write a makefile that does nothing but wiping
the whole system, given the necessary privileges (it's just 2
lines;-) So, keep in mind that 'make' isn't the compiler, it's
just a kind of scripting language that often is used to start
the compiler when a project consisting of several source files
has to be build (beside lots of other things).

And the '-j' option (followed by a number) just tells make to
try to use as many processes as that number (if possible) to do
what's in the makefile. I use it all the time since it allows
to use all the cores for compiling stuff in parallel and thus
it shortens the time to build something more complex, and I've
never had any issues.
                            Regards, Jens

While I don't know what's wrong with your system, I simply cannot
conceive of any way typing 'gmake -j' at some point in the past could
cause the code in readconf.c to misbehave the way you're describing (nor
any other way, when it comes down to it). You need to be looking for
your problem elsewhere.

RC5 only does what you're describing on the one messed-up system?

Do you have a program called gmke? ("which gmke" might help here,
although it may not deal with unconventional shell builtins). Is it
by any chance a symbolic link to code_red_virus?

How can you tell?

Rebooting the system and/or cycling power on it might help.

Power cycles, reboots nor resets have not helped.

You simply haven't provided enough information to guess what the cause
or solution of the problem might be.

Did you really type "gmke -j", or was that a typo for "gmake -j"?

If the latter, it will execute the commands specified in your Makefile,
possibly in parallel. Those commands could do quite literally anything,
and you haven't given us a hint what the Makefile looks like.

You've also been vague about what "the C compiler has not beeing working
properly" means. You haven't even told us which C compiler you're
using.

In any case, this doesn't look like a question about the C language,
which is what we discuss here -- and I don't know why you cross-posted
to comp.lang.c++.
