| Message-ID | <ogtotj$r7b$1@dont-email.me> |
Hi All,
I don't understand C. I am trying to find something
in some source code. What does "#" mean as in
#include "check_events.h"
and
#ifdef HAVE_LIBNOTIFY7
notification = notify_notification_new(summary, body,
"dialog-warning");
#else
notification = notify_notification_new(summary, body,
"dialog-warning", NULL);
#endif /* HAVE_LIBNOTIFY7 */
Is this a comment mark? And how does it work in "if, else, endif"?
Many thanks,
-T

Don't bother following that link. It's a Youtube video titled "You've

The #include causes the contents of check_events.h to be copied into the code being compiled at that location. The #ifdef/#else/#endif combination causes one of the two notification= statements to be used, depending on whether HAVE_LIBNOTIFY7 is defined or not. If you're going to be looking at C code, you need to study up a bit on it. Hi Jerry,
Is `LIBNOTIFY7` a system call? I have had
trouble with this code before because I was missing
`libnotify`.
$ rpm -qa \*notify\*
libnotify-0.7.5-8.el7.x86_64
As with all thing RHEL, it could be out-of-date.
Many thanks,
-T

Depending on whether it is or is not defined the function notify_notification_new() will have different parameter lists. The "standard" in C is for preprocessor values are all upper case, while others are lower or mixed case. And BTW - don't worry about the idiots here. All they want to do is argue the C standard and what is and is not legal. So far, the issue seems to be that there is a compiler switch to disable libnotify. And, I am hot on hits trail. And point taken.

You cannot learn C by asking about one feature at a time. Find a
decent C book or tutorial (and feel free to ask here for advice
about finding one).

When you're at the beginning of the year and you've got nine Democrats running for the nomination, maybe one or two of them are Dennis Kucinich. When you have nine Republicans, seven or eight of them are Michelle Bachmann.

I am not trying to learn C. I am trying to find a missing dependency. I can read Perl, Pascal, Modula2. I am lost when it comes to C. Hopefully, when I find what I am looking for, I won't have to read C again for many years. When it comes to C, there are folks far better at it than me and I will leave it to them.
