In Scotland, signs for walkers seem to be in km. Round here (in Cheltenham)
foor/cycle signs are in minutes which is absurd. I'm not sure if the
council is stupid, or assumes we are. Perhaps both.

The Swiss mark all their walking tracks in time. Distance doesn't tell
you much when there is a mountain to climb. Not too many of those in
Gloucestershire though...

Curiously, mountaneers who achieve their goal (summit and back) average zero
miles her hour.

Fuel consumption in say litres/metre coudl express it as an area (this car
does x hectares full stop).

Just right for whom? I don't know about you, but my feet are closer to
25 cm than to a "foot", and my thumb is about two centimetres wide, not
an inch. As for mixing them up... are you _really_ saying that the
British are dumb enough to mistake a kilometre for a yard? Not IME, they
aren't - they're just stubborn.

No, Richard - your mastery of English is in almost all ways excellent
(and in comparison to my Dutch it is simply staggering), but you are let
down by your relative ignorance of irregular verbs. Being British
myself, I am *firm*. You, a Dutchman, are stubborn. (The Americans are,
of course, pig-headed.)

No, no, you are firm, but we Dutchmen, and our neighbours, are
_continent_.

One cannot summarise all Britons in the same way. We Celts are firm and determined, whereas the Angles are obtuse.

Just wondering - would it then be reasonable to say that the Scots are
auto-orthogonal?

And that, too, is an unfair generalisation.

For instance, I rather think I am a cute Angle.

Such extremism is unbecoming in our race.

Don't bother trying to argue, because you know full well that I am
(almost always) a right Angle.

Yes, you've hit the nail on the head.

Oh no it isn't.

More curiosity: who or what is "Mac Angoish"?

The origin - give or take a misspelling or two I may well have
perpetrated in the Oirish Oarthaograbhi - of the original Irish name
from which the Anglicised spelling Guinness was derived: Son of Angus.

He's assuming that your e-mail address is a strong clue, which would
normally be a reasonable guess.
Unless, of course, you're someone like my wife, who insisted on choosing
an e-mail address that looks like it's based on someone's name, but
isn't even remotely similar to her actual name (people who know her well
enough might be able to guess at the connection).

I'm pretty sure those are adjectives. And Yes Minister is definitive
for verbs: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0080306/quotes

Oink.
