We are no longer in the days before prototypes.

Like I said earlier, there is a standard technique for dealing
with this portability issue, using the header <inttypes.h>. I'm
going to explain the technique, and also sketch out how it might
be implemented on systems that don't support the <inttypes.h>
header.
Also, let me say again that the warning you're getting here looks
like you're running into a bug in whatever compiler is being
used. The code examples I'm about to give should be portable to
any conforming implementation (that supports 64 bit integers,
which some C90 implementations may not). So if there are
problems with a particular compiler but not others that should be
looked at more closely.
The usual way this kind of portability issue is handled is like
this:
#include <stdio.h>
#include <stdint.h>
#include <inttypes.h>
...
int64_t aa = 0;
...
printf("%" PRId64 "\n", aa);
This method makes use of a macro, PRId64, defined in the header
<inttypes.h> and which expands to a string literal, that has the
appropriate width and conversion characters for an argument of
type int64_t. Usually it is defined as "ld" or "lld", although
on some exotic system it might be something else. This method
is preferred if you are using type names defined in <stdint.h>
and the systems you are working on all support <inttypes.h>.
If you don't want to rely on <inttypes.h>, you can do something
like what <stdint.h> and <inttypes.h> do, but on a smaller scale,
based on information available in the header <limits.h>. We are
going to define our own type names (actually only one in the
example below), and corresponding macros for use in printf()
formats. Here is a minimal example:
#include <limits.h>
#if INT_MAX == 9223372036854775807
typedef int int64;
#define Fd64 "d"
#elif LONG_MAX == 9223372036854775807
typedef long int64;
#define Fd64 "ld"
#elif LLONG_MAX == 9223372036854775807
typedef long long int64;
#define Fd64 "lld"
#else
#error hmmmm.. no width-64 integer type
#endif
#include <stdio.h>
int
main(){
int64 aa = 0;
printf( " aa is %" Fd64 "\n", aa );
return 0;
}
Code using this technique is portable to any implementation that
has a standard signed integer type of width exactly 64 bits (and
assuming it isn't pathological in some way, like having 128 bit
ints). Using format specifier macros (eg, Fd64 in this case)
probably looks a little weird, but it works nicely, and gcc is
smart enough to do its printf() format checking even with these
macros making up parts of the format string.
A more complete example would have unsigned types and formats,
width-32 as well as width-64, etc, but I think these expansions
are pretty obvious after looking at the above example. It's
a bit tedious to flesh out a more complete set of type names
and formatting macros, but it only needs to be done once, and
then it can be used in any environment that needs it.

The whole point of printf format strings is that they are human-readable.
If you want portable functions to convert bit patterns to character patterns
they are easy enough to provide.

How is %lld clearer than PRId64? All of the format specifier macros
follow a simple pattern - they start with PRI, then the format (d/i,
u, o, x/X - IOW the same as the % type specifier), followed by the
size (n, LEASTn, FASTn, MAX or PTR, matching the actual type being
used).

It's not entirely obvious that the empty concatenation operator is
being used. And the printf format specifier has been so successful
that it is very widely used across the industry. The new formats
break that standard.
The more general problem is endless fiddling due to different width
integer types.

Not right. Format strings for printf() being human-readable
is a useful property, but that is not their whole point.
Besides which, the argument value
"%" PRId64 "\n"
is also human-readable, not counting humans who shouldn't be
programming in C in the first place.
