I should also add - they are sure to charge interest on my mortgage
every day, even though I only pay it once a month. Because as soon as
they charge it, it becomes a receivable asset.

Yes, which is why packed decimal data types exist. U.S. banks will go
to 4 places past the cents, and large ones need to go to at least 99
billion. So the maximum would be 99,999,999,999.999999 - requiring more
precision than has been available for many decades. But packed decimal
natively went to 31 digits on IBM mainframes, even in the late 60's.

I wish C had a decimal type. It's supported on a lot of systems
(including Intel chips), and could be emulated on systems which don't
support it. It would make things a lot easier.

Interesting. In February this year you said

"IBM never had BCD. They had packed decimal. A different type all
together. And packed decimal, even in the 1960's, could go to 255
  digits."

when asked on what machines you replied:

"On every system since S/360. Some languages such as RPG restricted
support to 31 digits - but the hardware did not"

I kept quoting the 31 digit limit imposed by the S/360 and S/370
hardware but you never acknowledged it. Until now.

That is correct. The hardware supported 31 digits natively, and
libraries supplied with the OS extended that to 255 bits.

Two different things - once again showing your reading comprehension
problems.

No cookie. You said "Some languages such as RPG restricted support to
31 digits - but the hardware did not".

Sorry, once again you show you are just a troll. No, the hardware did
not restrict it to 31 digits. It natively supported 31 digits - but did
not restrict support to 31 digits.

A huge difference. But one I know your limited intelligence cannot
comprehend.

Yes, I can see what you are trying to suggest you meant.
