I really doubt that anyone who understands what they are doing would use C for writing a compiler these days - unless it was just for fun.

I don't see the problem in using C (if you like C and have experience with it.). My last compiler was written in a language that maps easily to C (apart from some issues with non-idiomatic code..). There is only one hash-table, and the few other data structures don't really correspond to any standard container types (structs that are linked in multiple different ways). Most searches are linear. Yet it's very fast. There is very little string processing (until you want to display the various structures and tables). Here's an example of an experimental raw tokeniser in C: https://github.com/bartg/langs/blob/master/clex.c I wanted to find the upper limit of how fast source code be processed. On my machines it was 10-12 million lines per second. (But it will progressively get slower as you add more and more of the compiler. Since gcc might run at 1000 times slower than this, you can do an awful lot before you get that slow.) No need for C++ at all. You might want to use a language like Python for rapid develpment, then translate it later, but you will be spoilt by its high level features (regular expressions for example) making it harder to port to C later on. -- Bart

I have 16 years of C++ , and i start to use more C now. I am still using and learning C++. I have implemented a C parser in C. I am very satisfied with C language, and I would not change to use C++. I could use C++ in a C way, but someone would ask why I am not using some C++ 20 features..mixed with C++ 98, 03, 11 14 and 17. There are some boilerplate code in C, I agree. Lack of containers<>. I don't miss std::strings. This is not a problem. I think it's better to have two concepts - string builder - and string. std::string is both. A professional programmer needs some tools arrays, stack , map. They will repeat in your code. It´s not something you need to reinvent, but reuse. I recommend C for serious code.

As you likely already know, Google Code has been shut down. They're
still making archives available, but you might consider finding a
different site (I like GitHub; YMMV). I hope you at least have reliable
copies of whatever you've published there.

It works for me. (But as I said before, migrating away from Google Code
would be a good idea.)

NoScript was blocking googleapis.com Sorry for the noise.

C is much faster. And the C containers library gives you the same power of expression than c++ without the huge costs of that bloated language! You can open and read a text file into a list with just one function call for instance. But those are FACTS, obviously I am wrong.

(I just had a look at the gcc 6.2 source (there's only 100,000 files of it in 600MB, it didn't take long...), and I can see little evidence of any C++ code. Yet Wikipedia reports it switched to C++ in 2012. So maybe they haven't done it yet, or I've got the wrong source code.) -- Bartc
