What "other rules"?

But you guys are hopeless. I'm tired of trying to teach the pigs to

argued with every one of them.

No wonder the real experts on the C language left this group long ago.

I don't know about Hawaii, but Purdue is in the second rank of US
universities, just below Yale and Harvard and similar. So it's not
in the same league as Oxford, but nothing to be sneezed at. A degree
from Purdue is well worth having.

When thousands of independent, respected authorities agree, I tend to
side with them over someone who makes unsubstantiated claims.

You've cited three broken Web sites, not thousands. And the claims that
have been made on the other side of the argument have been thoroughly
substantiated by reference to the document that defines the language and
thus has an authority regarding that language that is vastly greater
than even the most toweringly prestigious university.

The Standard is *definitive*. Where "respected authorities" disagree
with it, they are *definitively* in error, no matter how many thousands
of them there might be.

I've cited 5 so far. And they are only "broken" because you don't agree
with them.

You guys are hopeless. I'm tired of trying to teach the pigs to
sing. I've quoted multiple independent, respected sources and you've
argued with every one of them. The only independent source you have
quoted to support your position is a single site run by a single person,
with unsubstantiated claims as to how much his site is "peer reviewed".
If your position is so correct, you should be able to find thousands of
sites to support your position. I can do it for mine.

Compile time constant folding doesn't mean that the
second result (following the :) is ever evaluated.

Does 'compile-time constant folding' have any special meaning to the
language?

While the condition is nearly always true, the "*" and "+" of the second
operand have still be evaluated. In this example.

The generate code acts /as if/ the unused operand has not been
evaluated. There is no difference in the observable behaviour of the
program, so it is fine for the compiler to make this optimisation.

The vast majority of operators in C behave in a fashion semantically
equivalent to a function call. While ?:, &&, ||, and the comma are
processed syntactically like other operators, their semantics are totally
unlike those of a function call. It might be helpful to have terminology
to distinguish the operators which behave like functions calls from those
which do not, but I don't think the C Standard defines a term. C++ muddles
things further by making &&, ||, and the comma operator behave like function
calls in some contexts but not others.

I would think it would be helpful to regard "operators" of the above using
a different term from the operators that behave like function calls. Perhaps
"language operators" and "value operators" might be good, though I don't know
those exact terms would be helpful or confusing. Having some way of
distinguishing the two different kinds of operators would certainly be
helpful, though.

Yes, I've never denied that, though I think Jerry is of the opinion that
I did. His claim that I've denied the existence of any rules
constraining the order of evaluation is a delusion that seems to have
arisen from that misconception.
The concept of precedence can be used to describe (most of) the grammar
rules which determine which expressions are operands of other
expressions, but the standard never uses that method to describe them.
The rule (6.5p1) that requires the multiplication expression to be
evaluated before the addition expression is described entirely in terms
of which expression is a sub-expression of the other. In (1+2)*3, since
the addition expression is a sub-expression of the multiplication
expression, the exact same rule requires that it be evaluated first
rather than second. And the standard does not impose requirements on the
order in which sub-expressions are evaluated relative to each other
based upon operator precedence. In fact, it very explicitly says the
order is unspecified (6.5p3), just like K&R C.

No, you've just claimed there is no such thing as precedence or
associativity.

Quite -- it may be evaluated first or it may not be.

You need to say "as if" -- there may be no multiplication at all, nor,
indeed, any addition. It's this abstract "as if" effect that makes
talking about temporal ordering rather unhelpful. Combine that with the
fact that the most commonly quoted rule is simply wrong in so many cases
and you can see why it's better to describe precedence in terms of
parsing.

You still have to explain how the tree results in a value, but that
explanation will now simply be in terms of operands and operators and
the special cases can be described as you explain the operators in
turn.

The "rule" survives because it is a quick and simple way to explain what
most expressions mean, but it's not, in my opinion, a good one.

Once again you are mixing operator evaluation with operand evaluation.
There is only one operator here - the "=". So precedence and
associativity are not involved. The order of operand evaluation is not
defined.

Sorry to jump in.
However, the first example is not well-defined. Depending on the
definition of NULL it's a constraint violation of either the indirection
or the sizeof operator.

Yes. Annoyingly, I changed it from

  sizeof *x  // where x == NULL

at the last minute just to avoid having to have a comment explain things
but I should have given it more thought. Thanks for picking that up.

    sizeof (*(int*)NULL)
or
    sizeof (*(int*)0)

would also work. And in your example, you're assuming that x is not of
type void* (more generally, that it's a pointer to a complete object
type).

In normative text, the ISO C standard uses "associative" or a
related word zero times.

In normative text, the ISO C standard uses "precedence" or a
related word twice: once in 5.1.1.2, talking about compilation
phases, and once in 6.5.9 p3, explaining what == and != do.

In normative text, the ISO C standard gives one or more syntax
rules in each of the sixteen subsections of section 6.5, one for
each operation class. The given syntax rules relate operators in
one class to those of another class by the usual method of having
a nonterminal symbol for each operation class, and using those
nonterminal symbols in the other syntax rules to express how
different operators are syntactically and semantically grouped
within expressions.

C is not defined in terms of precedence rules or associativity rules. It does
have a grammar, many parts of which lend themselves to being summarized by
precedence and associativity, but other parts do not. In particular, a
precedence table for C would necessarily place the comma operator as having the
lowest possible precedence. That explains perfectly well why a,b?c:d,e must be
parsed as a,(b?c:d),e, but it does not explain why a?b,c:d must be parsed as
a?(b,c):d, rather than (a?b),(c:d), which would be a syntax error. The grammar
rules, on the other hand, make it perfectly clear: the middle operand is
specified as being an "expression", referring to the grammar rule in (6.5.15p1).

The grammar has an effect on the order of evaluation, but only a limited one:
"The value computations of the operands of an operator are sequenced before the
value computation of the result of the operator." (6.5p1). This means that
evaluation of "x" would be sequenced before evaluation of "sizeof x" (a fact
that's meaningful only if x has a variable length array type - otherwise
evaluation of the operand of sizeof is suppressed (6.5.3.4p2)). It also means
that that evaluation of "sizeof x", and either "B" or "C" (depending upon the
value of "sizeof x") is sequenced before evaluation of the entire expression.
However, that's the full extent of the influence that the grammar has over the
order of evaluation. "The grouping of operators and operands is indicated by
the syntax. Except as specified later, side effects and value computations of
subexpressions are unsequenced." (6.5p3).

The semantics of conditional expressions does specify that "sizeof x" gets evaluated before "B" or "C", with a sequence point between them (6.5.15p4) - but the grammar has nothing to say about that issue.

If the full expression had been "sizeof x + B + C", then evaluation of "sizeof x" and "B" would both be sequenced before evaluation of their sum, but the two expressions would be unsequenced relative to each other. The evaluation of C and the evaluation of the first sum, would both be sequenced before evaluation of the final sum. However, evaluation of "C" would be unsequenced relative to any of the other sub-expressions.
