Some programs running in low-memory systems rely upon such abilities. Perhaps the most common such case is to implement a doubly-linked list where each node holes a uintptr_t [or equivalent] whose value is the xor of the uintptr_t values of the "next" and "prev" pointers. If all code which needs to be able to navigate from a node will know the address of a node on one side, it will be able to find the address on the other by xor'ing the far side node's address (cast to a uintptr_t) with the stored value. Such an approach not only saves 50% on the storage required to hold next/prev pointers, but as a bonus it makes it very easy to reverse the list (if the code uses a circular linked list with two fixed dummy nodes at the beginning and end, swapping the two dummy nodes will reverse the order of all nodes within the list). The inability of compilers to effectively optimize such code means that in many cases it's better to use separate next/prev pointers, but the xor-link hack does offer real world performance benefits in memory- constrained systems, or in systems whose optimization abilities would be limited even if code didn't use the xor-link hack.

What kinds of optimizations will we lose if we use the XOR hack? Then it's a separate question if the trade-off is a good one. :)

Such that these should be considered in a GC proposal either as constraints or extra machinery to cope with them.
