Hello!

I do apologize for coming here with an offtopic, but I do so only
because I trust your opinion very much.
I have some issues with continuing learning C, and thus programming in
general, because I do lack necessary math skills - I try to recover the
ones I once knew, and gain new ones. Could you, please, advice me on a
newsgroup, if you know, where I can ask and get help on sometimes even
basic math questions, such as the ones from Precalculus, and later from
Calculus.
I have seen a group named sci.math, and also alt.algebra.help. How good
are they in terms of getting adequate help?

Thank you very much!

Respectfully,
Alla

Unfortunately, sci.math has - since about a year ago - contained
almost nothing either scientific or mathematical, but a blizzard
of nonsense from John Gabriel, Archimedes Plutonium, Pentcho Valev,
and a few others who have deluded themselves into the belief that
they are new experts. I wish you better luck in the .algebra group.

But I think sci.math would be worth a try. When people do post on
topic, good answers are often forthcoming, and you'd be helping to
improve the group with op-topic questions. The trouble is that you
might need a newsreader with good filtering to be able to read the group
easily. When I visit sci.math I see an almost empty group because
almost all the crank posters are being filtered. You might be OK if you
use Google Groups just to watch your own thread though. Look out in
particular for a poster called quasi -- he or she is always on topic and
posts good excellent replies at all levels, from simple algebra to
advanced topics.

Ben, thank you very much! I will follow your advice.
As to the newsreader, I use Thunderbird for a while already, which
offers a good filtering if one knows whom to filter out.

Hello!

Lesson #1: in science the best proof is the experience not the advice.

In addition to those two, other group titles suggest they might be
useful but they do not seem to be very active:
   alt.math
   alt.math.recreational
   alt.math.undergrad

It's not a newsgroup but Wolfram's web site
http://mathworld.wolfram.com/
has a decent search feature which may provide suitable data for
whatever issue you are dealing with.

And don't forget google. A lot of education centers have placed
tutorial and reference material online to help with exactly what you
describe.

Are you learning programming for a career or just for recreation? If you are learning programming just for recreation, you probably wont need to learn the maths side of programming. I am terrible at maths, but I hardly ever use maths in programming. I am still in school, and I don't want to do programming as a career. I also think it depends on what type of programming you want to do.

You say you are still in school, so I assume you are in your twenties,
or younger. Honestly, I would truly recommend you to get to grips with
math:
- it is essential in many different aspects, and will be a great skill
to fall back on in many different situations in your life and career,
whichever you choose; it's like knowing how to read and write;
- it is fun (!), and makes you so much smarter, faster, much more
intelligent, etc. - girls love such features. :-)

You will say huge thanks to yourself in the future if you learn math
now. Really.

I'm afraid that most woman takes the measure your intelligence only by the size
of your wallet. Being rich makes you beautiful even if you think you're fat and
ugly. :o)

There aren't that many fields that require much in the way of applied math
skills; most day-to-way coding work is about shoving data around, not
complex analysis. I can think of two situations in the last 30 years where
I needed to know something more advanced than basic algebra to complete
a coding task.

Granted, the fields that require advanced math knowledge also tend to be
the most interesting, and some of them pay *very* well. It would help us
to know which field(s) you were looking at in order to give you better
advice.

It would inspire many to know what are trying to do... since most programmer
are busy with boring|bad code. :-)

Thank you very much for answering. I am not questioning the fact of
learning the math - programming or not, it's essential; and,
fortunately, I have my list of things I need, and want, to recover,
and/or learn.

One of the books on my list of "necessities" on programming (after K&R,
which is still waiting for me - getting back to it on one of these days
hopefully), is the MIT's on algorithms.

So, I was merely looking for a good place to consult and ask for help
when I stumble upon matters I can't understand. I joined groups already
discussed in other answers.
