Oh, I am. And I converse on private servers with real C programmers -
including a couple who have been on the standards committee - and have
been for well over two decades.

But the experts gave up on this group years ago when the trolls came.
Against their advice, I tried coming here about a year ago, hoping to
help newer folks to not go wrong.

Wrong. I left and came back. The difference is I discuss C regularly
with *real* experts. Just trying to correct some newer people here
things that the idiots and trolls (like you) show them wrongly.

Let's see... you jumped into the middle of a conversation, trying to use
a failed computer in a niche market to indicate a statement I made was
wrong.

That's what trolls do.

Yes, let's start that discussion a THIRD sub-thread because two is not
enough. Troll.

Yup, why do you keep trolling? You jumped into the middle of a
conversation, trying go use a failed computer in a niche market to
indicate a statement I made was wrong.

Just what a troll does. And no starting a third sub-thread. Rather,
calling you on what you are. A troll.

Do any of them remember the compilers you were using that did non-K&R
conversions of function arguments? It would be interesting to have a
actual compiler (or two) identified and it must be frustrating that you
can can't remember them.

No, when the function definition was visible before the call, the
compiler could verify both the number and type of parameters. And
passing fewer arguments than the function specified would lead to
undefined behavior. More parameters generally wouldn't be a problem,
but again no guarantee.

Which statement? The one I was objecting to was the second sentence from you
quoted at the top of this message.

> ... The compiler will make default promotions.

Above, you said it was impossible to promote or convert parameters, now you're conceding that it does in fact promote them. How is that "standing by your statement"?

The fact that the default argument promotions might not be the correct
conversions needed to match the function definition, does not, in any way,
prevent a compiler from making those promotions. And, if the called function is
defined in a different translation unit, there's no guarantee that the function
prototype that's in scope at the point where the function is called is
compatible with the declaration that appears as part of the function
definition. Function prototypes are a major improvement over K&R function
declarations, but they didn't change that fact. They do make it easier to
discover such problems: put the prototype in a header file, and #include that
file in every translation unit where the function is called, and (crucially!)
also #include it in the translation unit where the function is defined.
However, that last point is often neglected by people who don't understand its
purpose.

One of the annoyances of C++ function overloading is that it prevents
this useful diagnostic, often leading to a crypric linker error rather
than a clear compiler error.

Learn to read - and comprehend. Defining the functions before the call
allowed the compiler to validate and, if necessary, convert the parameters.

As I said before - I already agreed with the default promotions. But
defining the function before the call allowed the compiler to validate
the number and type of parameters, and if necessary, convert types.

ANSI prototypes came out of that so that you didn't need the function
defined before you called it.

That isn't what prototypes are for. That's what declarations are for.

And aren't you the one that said that pre-ANSI also had declarations?

Yes. All prototypes are declarations, but not all declarations are
prototypes. A declaration allows you to write code to call a function
even though the compiler has not seen the definition. Thus:

#include <stdio.h>

int foo();

int main()
{
   int i = foo();
   printf("%d\n", i);
   return 0;
}

will compile, even though we can't see foo(). Note that int foo(); is a
declaration, but not a prototype.

A fool I may be, but I know the difference between a declaration and a
prototype. And now, *if* you have the wit to read for comprehension for
a change, so do you.

Oh, I understand what you are saying. Better than you understand
ANYTHING I've said.

Your "declaration" is pre-ANSI style and only allowed for compatibility.
 And it shows the exact reason why compilers improved.

What happens if foo() actually took two ints, a double and a string?
What's going to happen when main() calls it with no parameters? If this
is a big program, you have a major headache trying to figure out where
your stack got corrupted. Even a small program could take a lot of time
debugging the problem. After all, we did have debuggers at the time -
but they were quite limited compared to todays.

Placing the entire definition of foo() before main() defined the
parameters foo() required and allowed the compiler to catch errors like
this. It was a great improvement for programmers.

How would you like to code today without ANSI-style prototypes - just
basic ones like foo() above? Before the changes to the compilers,
that's exactly what we had.

I have long since learned that, when you claim to understand /anything/,
I must take that claim with a pinch of salt.

> Your "declaration" is pre-ANSI style and only allowed for compatibility.
> And it shows the exact reason why compilers improved.

No need for scare quotes. It /is/ a declaration.

> What happens if foo() actually took two ints, a double and a string?

Bad things, which is why prototypes were introduced.

> What's going to happen when main() calls it with no parameters?

You are trying to make the case for prototypes. You don't need to do
that. I know the case for prototypes, and I am perfectly happy with it.
I wasn't arguing that prototypes or bad. Nor was I arguing that function
declarations that don't specify the number and types of their arguments
are good.

Rather, I was arguing against your claim, quoted above and repeated
here. You said: "ANSI prototypes came out of that so that you didn't
need the function defined before you called it". That claim is incorrect.

Have you since retracted that claim while I wasn't looking, or do you
still stand by it?

You're quite right - K&R style declarations allow that too.

However, while he's been less than clear about it (this is Jerry after
all - he doesn't know the correct definitions of many of the words he
uses, such as declaration), I think what he was actually talking about
may have been that, prior to ANSI prototypes, you could get argument
count and argument type validity checks with some compilers, but only if
you defined the called routine prior to the calling routine, in the same
translation unit.

While such diagnostics were not mandatory, in that situation there would
be enough information available to allow such diagnostics. If Jerry had
only claimed that some compilers did indeed produce warnings for such
mis-matches, I might have believed him. I even have vague memories of
seeing such warnings around that time, though I can't be sure whether
they are from before or after I started using compilers that supported
prototypes.

No, K&R did not allow for ANSI-style prototypes. The only declaration
it allowed was for the return type of the function.

That is correct. And back in 1985, few people called them
"declarations". That term did not come into common usage until ANSI
prototypes became popular. Then the term was used to differentiate
ANSI-style from K&R (pre-ANSI-style) code.

I never said ALL compilers did it - just some. But that has been
ignored by the idiots who are arguing from a position of ignorance, just
to argue.

And it was more than just warnings to those compilers - it was usually a
fatal error.

And thanks for the confirmation.
