I appreciate the endorsement - but he was responding to what you were saying about Ben, not me. I'm sure he'd say equally nasty things about me - but he didn't do so in that particular message. > ... I'm not the kind of person to do so, but many people would see something to gain in avoiding the appearance of having been incorrect - it's pretty embarrassing. I'm used to the embarrassment, and if I lied, I'd expect to be found out, which would be even more embarrassing. However, according to Jerry, I've exceptionally good skills at deception, so being found out is not something I should have to worry about. Which leaves open the question: if I've got such skills, why didn't I use them to avoid the many previous situations where I've been publicly, embarrassingly, wrong? >> Additionally, it would not run on any current OS - none of >> them support DOS any more. (Noting that they are 20 years old, not 30 years old.) One of my favorite pieces of software was a program named MaxThink dating back to the mid 1980s, designed for MS-DOS 2.11, which continued to work fine all the way through Windows NT, and also when using DosEMU on Linux. It actually worked better under Windows NT. There was an opening sequence containing several pages of text, that ended with the display of a phone number for contacting the developer. Under MS-DOS 2.11, that opening sequence disappeared from the screen too quickly to be readable. Under Windows NT, for some reason, it executed a lot slower, and for the first time I found out about that phone number - which had long since been disconnected. I haven't owned any newer versions of Windows, so I haven't tested it with them. ... > I presume he has the compiler because long ago he used it for some work, > and has kept it since. In the past, I was often unconscionably irregular about keeping backups, and have occasionally paid the corresponding price in lost data and lost applications.

On the Amiga, you could connect two machines with the parallel port and access the other Amiga as a /drive/. I think you underestimate the power of computers in the 80's, because everything you say about 30 year old systems seems to apply more to 40 year old ones. -- Robert Spanjaard

It wasn't for at least a couple of more years before someone came out with the software to connect two together via the parallel port. Not that it makes any difference. The Amiga and Commodore were both failed attempts. A nice try, I admit.
