Joe Pfeiffer about qsort(): > There's really no reason to have that -- sorting an array > of integers is something that comes up very seldom in any > context other than freshman programming classes. It is often more efficient and convenient to extract the keys into an integer array and sort that instead of the original struct array. -- () ascii ribbon campaign -- against html e-mail /\ http://preview.tinyurl.com/qcy6mjc [archived]

Scott, I asked above how reading the manual would help me answer this question? It seems to me the knowledge I seek would come from a fairly comprehensive study of the manual, and not something that could be searched in short order. Do you have a quick solution to where I should go and look to obtain this information? Also, do you really want to use profanity to address people who ask questions? Do you gain something by insulting other people? -- Rick C. Hodgin

Hodgin No, because there *isn't* an exact page. There's no page listing all the things that *don't* appear in the language. The rest of us can figure this out on our own. Even I can figure it out, and I'm an idiot. If the standard doesn't define something, then it's not part of the language. But the only way to know that is to be familiar with what *is* defined. That's why you're being told to read the manual. Ultimately that's the only way to know. And it will save you heartburn from having to ask here. You've been hanging around here long enough for me to know you're not a child. You have to have developed *some* research skills by this point.

If you take all the documentation that's ever been produced anywhere, and delete from it the subset that is the C standard, then the remainder must include all the things that don't appear in the language. Just run a quick grep on that and if you get any results, then it's probably not in the standard. Probably.

That would occur in a significant fraction of all messages posted in this newsgroup, as well as in the documentation of most C compilers. There's also a pretty good chance of such subsets occurring in contexts associated with other C-like languages. > remainder must include all the things that don't appear in the > language. ... Not by a long shot. That doesn't include the things that don't appear in the standard, and also don't appear in any documentation anywhere. Those things infinitely outnumber the things that do appear somewhere in some documentation. > ... Spend a few minutes looking up the documentation for the qsort() function - in the C standards, or with a google search - and then write your question as "I read the section in the standards, and googled a bit, but I can't find any standard functions for using with qsort(). Am I missing something?" <http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html>

I haven't come across a good method to systematically generate type specific
comparisons. For native arithmetic types (type whose comparison can be
implemented in C syntax), you can macro the prototype and body so you can
spit out a type specific function to use as needed.
#define C_CMP_PROTO( NAME, TYPE ) \
int c_##NAME##_compare( const void* p, const void* q )
#define C_CMP_IMPL( NAME, TYPE ) \
int c_##NAME##_compare( const void* p, const void* q) \
{ \
return ( *(const TYPE*)p > *(const TYPE*)q ) - \
( *(const TYPE*)p < *(const TYPE*)q ); \
}
You're depending that the type supports native '<' and '>' operators. You
need the NAME and TYPE to do something like 'uint' and 'unsigned int'.
Even if you define your own list of supported comparison functions like for
'int', there's enough quirks like what to do with integer types from stdint.h
that I've come to the point where I try to keep the scope for these as small
as possible and only define them as needed.
Then, when you start wanting to sort records based on specific fields, you
start defining comparison functions for each individual field. It starts
becoming a maintenance nightmare if your users depend on support for their
pet comparison functions for their use cases.
Others people's mileage may vary.
Best regards,
John D.

If I remember correctly:
qsort() just uses a pointer to function to compare a and b?

Programmers these days are seldom permanent posts, mostly contract jobs.
You definitely need extra skills to keep getting new programming
contracts, as programs don't die or rot.
Another problem is the changing programming tools and languages. Can
your brain learn new things as it ages? Well... maybe you are the lucky
kind that could do that. :)
