%d prints its argument as a decimal value
%c prints its argument as a character

it should not be a suprise that %d and %c produce different output.

What character sequence do you expect to receive from typing F1 ?
Here, on an xterm, pressing F1 on the keyboard
produces the character sequence

  ESC [ 1 1 ~

or, in decimal

  27 91 49 49 126

five getchar() calls are needed to read that sequence.
