That's why real-world benchmark programs are carefully written so their
output depends on the result of the computation, so it can't be
optimized away.

If you write:

    #include <stdio.h>
    int main(void) {
        printf("hello");
        for (long i = 0; i < 1000000000; i ++) {
        }
        printf(", world\n");
    }

you've specified a loop that iterates a billion times *in
the abstract machine*, but that loop has no visible behavior.
The implementation is free to map the behavior of the abstract
machine to an actual program that simply prints "hello, world\n".

There may be languages that guarantee that a program like this will
take longer to run than a similar program without the loop. C is not
such a language. (Perhaps your language is, or is intended to be.
That's fine, but it means it will take some extra work to map your
language onto C.)

I suspect that's because your language effectively treates all objects
as volatile.  C doesn't.
