On my system, there are libX11.so* files under /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu
and /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu.  The two directories are needed to
support generating both 32-bit and 64-bit code.

I found this out using the command
    find /usr/lib -name 'libX11.so*'

The compiler (actually the linker) knows where to find the libraries.
Compiling with "gcc -v" should tell you where it finds the files it
uses.
