Agreed.  When i was doing memory allocation, if you ask for 16 bytes it
really was 16 bytes, plus some per-page control structures stage left.

Trick is all the objects on the same 'page' (not the same as a VM page,
you can make it what size seems to work best) are the same size!  So you
just need the page number, look it up in a hash table (don't worry, this
is very fast).
