I missed this.  Guaranteeing wrapping on signed integer overflow will
only matter for this code when int is also 16 bits.  There may not even
be a version of gcc with -fwrapv that targets an architecture with
16-bit ints.

Not for you, no, but for such a loop to be entirely portable it has to
deal with the two problems I pointed out to the OP.
